How to Use BD Vacutainer Safety-Lok Blood Collection Sets

Gather and Inspect Supplies: Prepare all necessary items. BD Safety-Lok™ Blood Collection Set, Vacutainer holder, blood collection tubes, gloves, tourniquet, alcohol swab, gauze, and labels. Check each item for sterility, damage, and expiration before use.

Prepare the Patient: First, place the tourniquet above the vein site. Then, find a good vein and clean it with an alcohol swab. After that, let the area dry completely so you can avoid irritation or infection.

Assemble the Device: Secure the BD Safety-Lok™ needle into the Vacutainer holder by twisting it firmly into place. Make sure it is aligned correctly and ready for insertion.

Perform the Venipuncture: Hold the wings securely for stability. With the needle bevel facing up, insert the needle into the selected vein. Once you confirm placement, insert the Vacutainer tube into the holder. The vacuum will draw the correct volume of blood into the tube automatically.

Switch Tubes as Needed: If multiple samples are required, change tubes in the proper order of draw. Keep the needle stable and avoid movement to maintain flow and prevent vein injury.

Remove the Needle and Activate Safety: Once all tubes are filled, release the tourniquet. Carefully withdraw the needle from the vein, then immediately slide the Safety-Lok™ shield** over the needle using a one-handed motion until it locks with an audible click.

Dispose of the Device: Place the used needle and holder into a certified sharps container. Do not attempt to reuse or recap the needle.

Label and Store Samples: Label each tube immediately with the patient’s name, date, and time of collection. Store or transport the samples per your facility’s guidelines for analysis.
