Frequently Asked Questions
What are the documents that an employee should take for a DOT drug test?
The employee is required to carry their Driver’s License with a photo ID and the Custody and Control Form to the DOT drug test.
Is it possible to dilute or substitute the urine sample of an employee testing for a DOT drug screening?
The DOT drug test has many safeguards to check for any dilution or substitution in the urine sample. Further, the urine sample collected should be within the temperature range of 90° to 100° F. If the temperature range is not observed, then care is taken to get the sample from the donor directly.
Should the driver report for a second test if a cancelled test result is received?
The MRO verification statement indicates whether a second collection is required. For a Random test, no collection is needed. But in the case of a Pre-Employment DOT test, Return-to-Duty DOT test or Follow-Up DOT test, the employer should report for second collection.
If a driver gets a positive result in the DOT drug test and then he apologizes and assures that it won’t happen again, should he go for treatment still?
Yes, since the driver has violated DOT drug and alcohol regulations, he should appear for the Return-to-Duty process and go through the procedure of contacting a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP).
Does an owner-operator need a DOT drug screening?
Yes, the regulations make it compulsory that an owner-operator has to undergo the DOT drug and alcohol testing.
Does an owner-operator read the policy and sign the acknowledgement form?
Yes, the DOT drug testing regulations state that the driver gets the policy having specific information and also should maintain a receipt signed by the driver.
Can a small company manage its own DOT drug and alcohol testing program?
The regulations require a policy, a certified MRO, Post-Accident training and Reasonable-Suspicion training, which are not easy for a small company to manage. Hence a Consortium or Third Party Administrator is required to notify the changes in the regulation and to issue the reports.
Does the DOT drug and alcohol screening differ for big and small companies?
The DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations are the same for bigger and smaller companies and it does not vary whether the company has few or many drivers.
What is meant by Custody and Control Form?
A CCF is called a Custody and Control Form, which contains a five-part carbon copy and is used for documenting the information required for a DOT drug and alcohol testing.
How to select the form for DOT or Non-DOT drug testing?
“Federal Drug Testing Custody and Control Form” is used for all DOT drug testing and “Custody and Control Form” is used for Non-DOT drug testing.
Are Custody and Control Forms available for a specific company with the company’s information printed on it?
Yes, Custody and Control Forms are available for a specific company with the company’s information printed on it.
Is it legal to modify a CCF as per the requirement?
The DOT drug testing sites have the Alcohol Testing Forms on hand at the collection sites and the employees are required to bring Custody and Control Forms only to the site.
Where can the driver collect a CCF form if he is on the road and does not have a CCF form?
If the driver is on the road and he is selected for a Random test, he can return back to his company area to collect a CCF form.
