Signs an Employee Has a Substance Abuse Problem

A drug-free workplace is a productive one. In order to ensure that your staff is working at their full capacity, create a clear drug and alcohol policy. If you suspect that somebody is violating that policy, check in with them and ask how they’re doing. Here are a few signs an employee has a substance abuse problem. When you know what to look out for, you can more easily reach a solution.

Increased Tardiness and Absenteeism

When an employee calls in sick more often than usual, or if they arrive late to the office, there may be an underlying issue at hand. They could have personal or family issues that require their attention, but if you notice a pattern emerging, ask them to explain that pattern. When someone struggles with drug addiction or alcohol dependence, they may sleep too much or have a hard time organizing their thoughts.

Declining Health and Hygiene

If you’re used to seeing an employee wearing clean clothes with a fresh face, you’ll notice if they start coming in with a more rumpled appearance. Other employees will take notice if their co-worker smells like they haven’t showered in a few days. Flu-like symptoms and sunken eyes can also indicate increased drug use. If your employee regularly shows up to work with bloodshot or heavy eyes, have an alcohol testing kit on hand to ensure they haven’t been drinking on the job. When someone spends too much of their time using drugs and alcohol, hygiene and good health fall by the wayside.

Recent Financial Strain

Drug use is an expensive habit. If an employee often asks for advances on their pay, they may have accrued additional expenses. They could be legitimate, like medical bills or credit card debt, but your employee may also be funding an addiction. And if they’re asking their co-workers to float them money, they raise an immediate red flag.

An employee who struggles with addiction may think they’re hiding it well, but a drug or alcohol testing kit will give you answers should you need them. Get to know everyone in the office; when you know their habits and general temperament, you’ll be quick to spot changes. These are only three signs an employee has a substance abuse problem, but you know your staff better than anyone. If you need to perform any random drug testing, American Screening Corp is on your side.
