Preventing Opioid Overdose: Focus on Fentanyl

Preventing Opioid Overdose: Focus on Fentanyl

Opioids are compounds that are extracted from poppy plant and are mainly used for the relieving of pain. The well known medicines like Fentanyl, Morphine and Tramadol come under the category of Opioids. Problems arise due to the misuse, prolonged use and use without doctor’s prescription and usually it causes breathing trouble. The main concern is the overdose of Opioid which can result in death. Though 80% of deaths are due to Opioids in U.S. and 20% of deaths are due to Opioid overdose, it is highly disturbing that only 10% of people undergo proper treatment.

Therefore it is advisable to identify the symptoms of Opioid overdose in people and provide them with immediate treatment to avoid fatal death. Signs due to overdose of Opioid are as follows:

  • Loss of Consciousness
  • Falling asleep often
  • Shallow Breadth
  • Small constricted pupils
  • Chocking
  • Blue or Cold body

Fentanyl Test

Fentanyl is a synthetic Opioid which is commonly used for relieving pain and giving anaesthesia. Different forms of Fentanyl are carfentanil, acetylfentanyl, butyrfentanyl, and furanyl fentanyl. Though it is included in the essential medicines list, Fentanyl is 100 times very stronger than morphine and 20 times stronger than Heroin. The real problem arises when drug dealers mix Fentanyl with medicines and sell them as regular tablets along with prescribed medications. This Fentanyl overdose results in death, even without the knowledge of the patients regarding the contamination of drug.

Treatment of Fentanyl Overdose

To treat the overdose effect of fentanyl the following guidelines can be observed.

  • The Patient can be provided with a breathing machine to stabilize the breathlessness.
  • The medicine Naloxone can be given to the patient immediately.
  • Activated charcoal can be given which acts in the digestive tract and easily absorb the drug.
  • Induce vomiting or pumping out to help the drug to be thrown out of the stomach.

Fentanyl Test Strips

Fentanyl Test Strips are used to detect the illicit drugs consumed by a person. These strips play an important role in Drug Testing which is crucial for employees who work in service industries, construction business and transportation. Avoiding Drug testing may result in very fatal consequences both for the concern and the customers. Fentanyl Test Strips are small strips of paper that can be immersed inside the human specimen to detect the presence of Fentanyl. Fentanyl Test Strips manufactured by American Screening Corporation play a crucial role in avoiding drug overdose deaths and are very cost friendly.

Procedure for using ASC’s Fentanyl Test Strips

American Screening Corporation’s Fentanyl Test Strips are very easy and convenient to use, by following the step by step instructions given in the Fentanyl Drug Test Kit.

  • Check whether the Fentanyl Drug Testing Kit is intact and tightly sealed.
  • Check if the human specimen urine is at room temperature between 15 - 30° Celsius before starting the test.
  • Remove the Fentanyl Test Strip from the foil wrapper or the testing container.
  • Wait until the container comes to room temperature. Otherwise condensation of moisture will occur in the container which should be avoided.
  • Write the name of the patient and the details on the label of the container.
  • Dip the Fentanyl Test Strip into the container having the urine specimen with the arrow pointing downwards to the urine.
  • Care should be taken that the Fentanyl Test Strip must not cover the maximum line.
  • After 15 seconds remove the Fentanyl Test Strip from the urine specimen and lay the strip on a flat dry surface. The surface should be non-absorptive and clean.
  • Be careful enough to read the result within 5 minutes. The results taken after 5 minutes are not valid.
  • The coloured lines in the Fentanyl Test Strip will indicate the result.

Analysis of the Result of Fentanyl Test Strip

If one coloured line appears in the control region and another coloured line is seen in the testing region then the result is negative and no trace is detected in the urine specimen.

When the coloured line appears in the control region and no coloured line in the testing region then the result is positive and traces of drug are detected in the urine specimen. In this case the sample is further sent to the laboratory for confirmation by Mass Spectrometry and Gas Chromatography.

If the coloured line does not appear in the control region then the result is invalid indicating that either the volume of the specimen is not sufficient or the procedural technique is wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions

1.What is a Fentanyl Test Strip?

A Fentanyl Test Strip is a small strip of paper which can be immersed in the human specimen like urine. It detects the presence of Fentanyl and other prohibited drugs in the sample.

2. What is “cut-off level”?

The cut-off level indicates a particular concentration level of  fentanyl in a sample. Above that concentration point the test is called positive, and below that concentration it is called negative.

3. Does a positive result mean drug abuse?

It means trace of drug is detected in the sample. But the confirmation test should be done in the laboratory by Mass Spectrometry and Gas Chromatography.

4. What does a negative result indicate?

A negative result indicates either the trace of drug is not at all detected in the sample or the trace concentration is below the cut-off level.

5. How quick the results are shown in Fentanyl Test Strip?

The results are shown within 5 minutes in Fentanyl Test Strip. The result checked after 5 minutes is not valid.
