The Shellfish Allergy Test screens for allergic reactions to certain shellfish types.
The panel detects a person’s sensitivity to, or intolerance of, the following:
Most people exhibiting symptoms of shellfish allergy are adults, although the condition can affect children.
Severe cases can lead to anaphylaxis, which may be fatal. Anaphylaxis involves the over-release of chemicals that could lead to shock or cardiac arrest.
Diagnosing shellfish allergy requires the detection immunoglobulin E (IgE) in the blood. IgE is an antibody or immune protein that reacts to allergenic substances. A person allergic to a particular shellfish yields increased amounts of allergen-specific IgE when tested.
