The Grain Allergy Test screens for allergic reactions to certain grain varieties.
The panel detects a person’s sensitivity to, or severe intolerance of, the following:
- Whole grain
Severe cases can lead to anaphylaxis, which can be deadly. Anaphylaxis is associated with the over-release of chemicals that could result in shock or cardiac arrest.
In diagnosing grain allergy, it helps to look for immunoglobulin E (IgE), an antibody or immune protein linked to allergic reactions. A person allergic to a particular grain type yields increased amounts of allergen-specific IgE in the blood when tested.
Why Take the Grain Allergy Test?
This screening procedure checks for an individual’s allergic reaction to specific grains, such as wheat and barley, although it does not predict the severity. Managing the problem usually requires a special diet.
