What are some signs of substance abuse?

  • Neglecting responsibilities at home, school or work.  Examples are:
    • Flunking classes
    • Skipping work
    • Neglecting your children
  • Using drugs under dangerous conditions
  • Taking risks while high such as:
    •  Driving while high
    • Using dirty needled
    • Having unprotected sex
  • Drug use is causing you legal trouble.
  • Having  problems in your relationships, such as:
    • Fights with your partner or family members
    • Loss of old friends
    • An unhappy boss
  • You built up a tolerance and need to use more of the drug to experience the same effects you experienced with smaller amounts.
  • Drugs are taken to avoid or relieve withdrawal symptoms.
  • You experience the following during long periods without drugs:
    • Anxiety
    • Depression
    • Nausea
    • Restlessness
    • Insomnia
    • Shaking
    • Sweating
  • Your life revolved around using drugs
  • You’ve lost control over your drug use
  • You send most of your time thinking about drugs and figuring out how to get them.
  • You quit hobbies you once enjoyed.
  • You still use drugs despite the problems it causes.
