FAQs

Adulterations

What is an adulterant?

Anything that can transform or alter a drug test.

Examples of Adulterants

Table salt, bleach, laundry detergent, lemon juice, vinegar, toilet bowl cleaner and eyedrops – are all household chemicals which are used for adulterating urine specimens. These can all be identified through routine specimen integrity tests (creatinine, pH, temperature and specific gravity), except eyedrops. Moreover, some adulterants – Klear, Urine Luck , Whizzies and Stealth cannot be detected. However, if the concentrations of specific abused drugs are reasonable then they can be successfully masked during drug testing by the adulterants. For monitoring performance of tests for creatinine, pH and specific gravity and for identifying the presence of such adulterants – urine dipstick tests are available commercially. Although the effectiveness of masking drugs-of-abuse testing has not been fully validated, there are specific saliva-cleaning mouthwashes and hair shampoo available that help in avoiding detection of drugs in saliva samples or hair. Exposure to hemp oil can lead to positive results for marijuana. Additionally, consumption of poppy seed cake can lead to positive screening tests results for opiates. Even though these do not represent the actual drug of abuse, the previous examples can be classified as positive results in drugs-of-abuse testing.

Adulterant Testing

In the testing for misused drugs, adulterants present a new challenge. Routine specimen integrity testing (involving pH, creatinine, specific gravity, temperature) is insufficient for identifying the presence of recent adulterants such as Urine Luck, Klear and stealth. If the misused drugs are present in the concentrations (100%, 150% of cut off concentrations), then they can potentially affect the GC-MS confirmation step. Additionally, they can cause false-negative results in immunoassay screening steps. Consequently, if such agents are used for adulteration then the actual presence of a drug can easily be unnoticed and unseen.

For this reason, many dipstick tests and spot tests have been introduced and are accessible for authorization of specimen integrity. Moreover, studies are required for mouthwash products for causing negating saliva testing for misused drugs and hair shampoo, for showing false-negative results in hair drug tests.

Laboratory professionals must be familiar with the fact that consumption of poppy seed cake and hemp oil leads to true-positive results, including opiate and THC assays. The laboratory and collection site have specific components to identify invalid specimens. For example; the urine temperature must be between 90.5°F to 98.9°F. Specific gravity should be between 1.005 and 1.030 and the pH should be between 4.0 and 10.0. Creatinine concentration should be between 20 to 400 mg/dL. If the creatinine is less than 20 mg/dL and the specific gravity is less than 1.003, then a specimen is classified as diluted. Laboratory must perform pH and creatinine analysis of all specimens for drugs-of-abuse testing. Other than that, more tests are recommended to identify the presence of other adulterants.

Adulterants in drug testing – how and why?

What is adulteration with urine drug testing?
This is where a urine donor will add substances to the urine specimen with the intent to render a positive reading for drugs into a negative reading.

How widespread is urine adulteration?
It has been estimated that 4% of the urine specimens submitted in the U.S. for testing are adulterated.   With information that is easily accessible on the Internet on ways to adulterate your specimen, this number will be increasing.

What are these adulterants?
Commonly available household substances used after the urine is collected that include:

  • Baking soda
  • Bleach
  • Detergent
  • Eye drops
  • Liquid chlorine bleach
  • Liquid drain cleaner
  • Glutaraldehyde
  • Iodine tincture
  • Pyridinium chlorochromate
  • Vinegar
  • Water

Commercially available products that are ingested prior to providing the urine specimen that include:

  • Amber 13
  • Clean-X
  • Clear Choice
  • Instant Clean ADD-It-ive
  • Lucky Lab LL418
  • Klear
  • Krystal Kleen
  • Mary Jane Superclean 13
  • Purafyzit
  • Stealth
  • Test Clean
  • THC-Free
  • Urine Luck 6.3
  • UR’n Kleen
  • Whizzies

Do adulterants really work?
Most of the adulterants do not work very well, but do affect the drug testing results.  For instance:

  • Bleach interferes with on-site drug tests, which leads to a false negative result.
  • Nitrite interacts with the GC/MS confirmation procedure for THC and causes a positive THC result by on-site test to fail confirmation.
  • Several commercial adulterants interfere with on-site drug tests resulting in a false negative result.

What are the abbreviations for Adulterations?
Creatinine
Creatinine is the waste product of creatine, which is an amino-acid contained in muscle tissue.
Creatinine levels in normal urine are generally greater than 20 Milligrams per Deciliter (mg/dL).

  • Creatinine levels between 10 and 20 mg/dL may be due to increased liquid consumption.
  • Creatinine levels below 2.0 mg/dL are an indication that water was added to the urine specimen.  This is often called “dipping.”
  • Creatinine levels of 0.0 mg/dL are an indication the specimen is not consistent with human urine.

pH
The pH scale measures how acidic or basic a substance is with ranges from 0 to 14.  A pH less than 7 is acidic and greater than 7 is basic.
The pH for normal urine is between 4.8 and 7.8.

  • Lower pH levels below 4.8 indicate possible ingestion of acidic substances.
  • Higher pH levels above 7.8 indicate possible presence of basic compounds.

Nitrate
Normal urine should not contain any trace of nitrates.   Positive results for nitrates are an indication of the presence of an adulterant.

Specific Gravity
Specific gravity levels in normal urine will be between 1.005 and 1.035.   Water has a specific gravity of 1.0, therefore if:

  • The specific gravity of the urine specimen is less than 1.005 this indicates the possibility of a diluted specimen with liquid (i.e. water).

The specific gravity of urine specimen is greater than 1.045 this indicates the possible presence of a dissolved solid (i.e. sodium chloride) in the specimen.

How can the adulteration problem be combated?
This problem can be eliminated by the use of adulteration testing products such as:

  • UrineCheck 7
  • Adulterant Check 7

Is Glutaraldehyde an indicator for a tampered urine test result?
Yes.  Some adulterants contain Glutaraldehyde, which could cause a false negative result.  Glutaraldehyde is not normally found in urine, therefore the detection of this in a specimen is an indicator of adulteration.

Summary
Oxidants/Pyridinium Chlorochromato (PCC) will test for the presence of oxidizing agents such as bleach and hydrogen peroxide.   Normal urine should not contain oxidants or PCC.

Oxidants are measured in urine to determine if a donor has cleaned out their system or is trying to mask drugs in their urine. A too high or too low reading can let you know that the possibility exists that the donor has used some type of system cleaner (bleach, PC, and several other additives can be used with unobserved collections).

SG is the abbreviation for Specific Gravity which lets you know whether or not the donor has watered down the specimen. SG too high can show dilution and too low can simply mean that the person was dehydrated or there are a few system cleaners that can cause low SG as well. One note here is that if the donor has a “shy bladder” and drank a lot of water prior to giving the sample SG will be high and it doesn’t always mean that the donor has diluted the urine directly (observed collections are important in assisting you to determine this).

pH too low can be indicative of a donor who has used a cleaner but there are instances where a donor has diabetes or specific kidney issues that their urine pH is already low (knowing the donor’s medical history is important here). pH too high is also indicative of kidney issues but is also a strong indicator that the client has used something to mask drug use if medical history shows no kidney problems.

Glut and Cre that are too low are indicative of specific system cleaners and the list of these can be found on the SAMHSA website.

Alcohol Drug Testing

What is ETG Testing?

Ethyl glucuronide (EtG) is a metabolite of ethanol which is formed in the body by glucuronidation following exposure to ethanol, usually from drinking alcoholic beverages. Its presence in urine may be used to detect recent alcohol consumption, even after ethanol is no longer measurable. The presence of EtG in urine is a definitive indicator that alcohol was ingested.

A EtG Urine Alcohol Test is an alcohol screening with a 3 day look back period. It detects Ethyl Glucorinide in the body for 70 to 80 hours after drinking alcohol. The presence of EtG in urine means the person has consumed alcohol within the past few days. It can be detected in urine even after the ethanol alcohol itself is no longer measurable.

Alcohol testing (like breathalyzers) measure the amount of ethanol alcohol itself in the body, this method only detects alcohol consumption for several hours. However, because this urine dip card detects the substance that the body produces as it metabolizes the alcohol, EtG testing is able to detect consumption for a much longer period, typically up to 80 hours.

How often should you have your Breathalyzer calibrated?

It is recommended that you have a breath alcohol detector verified for accuracy every 1-12 months, depending on frequency of use. If you are using the breath alcohol detector multiple times daily, it is suggested to have the device calibrated at least monthly. If you do not use the breath alcohol detector daily but still use it several times a month, then it is suggested to have it verified at least every 6 months. If you use the alcohol detection only on rare occasions, then you should have it calibrated at least yearly. Calibration helps ensure that your device is operating correctly, and is an inexpensive way to greatly increase the useful life of your breath alcohol detector.

DNA Testing Information

What DNA test do I need?

The price is $145 for EACH test involved (except semen test which is $90). If you are needing to see if DNA is present and want to compare that DNA to a sample, you will have to pay $145 for the standard DNA Detection test and another $145 for the DNA Comparison test, for a total of $290. If you also want to see if semen is present, that is an additional $90.

The lab does not offer the DNA Differential Extraction any more. The lab cannot test to see if female DNA is present. The only test for gender is the DNA Detection Y Chromosome, which tests to see if male DNA is present and completely ignores any female DNA. If you’d like to see if male DNA is present and compare that to their own, the charge is $145 for the DNA Detection Y Chromosome and another $145 for the DNA Comparison.

When can I receive my lab results?

Lab results can take up to 5 to 7 business days from the day the lab receives your test kits.  If you purchased an overnight hair confirming kit you will receive your results in two days.

What are the chain of custody forms?

A chain of custody form is a drug result form that records positive and negative results for drugs being tested for. We offer the chain of custody form in two forms either carbon copy or a pdf format. The carbon copy has to be purchased while the pdf file will be sent over through email at no additional charge.

Are your DNA tests Court Approved?

Our DNA tests are only court approved if the test is being administered by a licensed healthcare provider in your state.  If you’re collecting the samples and then sending them off to a lab this will not stand up in court.

Can we test ourselves in the workplace?

Yes ,with proper training and this will give your company a substantial savings.  This eliminates the collection costs as well as having to pay travel time for your employee to get to and from the collection facility.

What if I get a positive result?

All Presumptive Positive Results should be sent to a lab for a confirmation that the result is accurate.  ASC recommends a Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) confirmation by a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) certified laboratory.

If a drug test is positive, can it be determined how long ago the drug was taken and over what period of time?
DETECTION IN URINE: 12-72 HOURS
DETECTION IN SALIVA: 1-48 HOURS
DETECTION IN HAIR: 2 weeks-90 DAYS
Will over-the-counter or prescription medication(s) give a false-positive test result?

Over-the-counter and prescription drugs may cause a positive test results.   American Screening Corp’s (ASC’s) website has a drug search capability for most over-the-counter and prescription drugs.   This search will provide information if an over-the-counter or prescription drug will display positive or non-reactive test results with one of ASC’s products.
You can search by:

  • First you must Sign in to your ASC account.
  • Clicking on the “Drug Search” blue tab located on the top of ASC’s website.
  • On the “Drug Search” page is two drop down screens.  One for Trade (Brand name drug) and one for Generic drug.

If the drug you are searching for is not in our drug search, contact ASC and we can research an answer.
In addition, if the donor takes numerous medications, this will increase the probability of a false positive for drugs.  It is recommended that the positive specimen be sent for a Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) confirmation by a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) certified laboratory.

What are these rape date drugs and how do they work?

Rohypnol and Gamma-Hydroxybutyerate (GHB).

Rohypnol is a sleeping pill and a very potent tranquilizer similar to Valium, but stronger. This is known as a rape drug because perpetrators slip it into a victim’s drink causing them to blackout.  This drug takes away a victim’s normal inhibitions, leaving the victim helpless and blocking the memory of a rape or assault.

GHB was originally developed as an anesthetic, and sold in powdered, liquid or capsule form.  GHB usually is tasteless, but may be recognized at times by a salty taste.  This drug offers an alcohol-like, hangover free “high” with possible pro-sexual effects (dis-inhibition often occurs and inhibitions are extremely suppressed).

What are some of the common street names for drugs?

Amphetamine – Speed, amp, bennies, black beauties, chalk, uppers, hi, speed balls, beans, hiballs, beenie babies, or eves.

Barbiturates Benzodiazepines – Downers, uppers, highway, lows, reds, barbs, or trangs.

Cocaine – Coke, crank, snow, flake, crack, blow, rock, line, snuff, sugar, snort, or stones.

GHB (Gamma-Hydroxybutyerate) – G, Liquid X, Liquid E, Scoop, Soap, Gook, Grievous Bodily Harm, Georgia Home Boy, Natural Sleep-500, Easy Lay or Gamma 10.

Marijuana – Pot, weed, herb, bud, MJ, doobie, reefer, joint, blunts, grass, rope, or hemp roach.

Methamphetamine – Crystal, meth, ice, glass, speed, icebergs, bergs, ecstasy, or MDEA.

Opiates (heroin) – Horse, smack, hairy hombre, H, scag, jones, or fix.

Phencyclidine (PCP) – Angel dust, sherms, star dust, magic dust, dust, or silver/gold glitters.

Rohypnol – roofies, Roche, R-2, rib and rope, or rophies.

What is the difference between codeine, heroin, and morphine?

Chemically there is no difference.  All of these drugs are derived from opium or the opium chemical structure and are in the Opiate class of drugs.  The only difference between the three is primarily in the manner in which opium is refined or synthetically manufactured and the form and method of delivery.

What is THC?

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)  is the primary metabolite of Marijuana.

Marijuana is a hallucinogenic agent derived from the leaves, flowers or seeds of the hemp plant  Marijuana is almost always smoked and inhaled into the lungs where it is quickly metabolized by the body into THC, which is excreted in the urine.

Why is there a separate test for Oxycodone if it is an Opiate?

Because Oxycodone is synthetically manufactured opiates that are not directly refined from the opium poppy resin source.  While the chemical chains are similar, the detection of synthetic opiate drugs requires a lower sensitivity detection level than that established for non-synthetic opiates.

What is the difference between Methamphetamine and Amphetamine?

Both are potent symphathominetic agents.

Methamphetamine is the parent drug.  It changes into amphetamine in the body.  Both methamphetamine and amphetamine are excreted in the urine.

A positive result for Amphetamine can be interpreted as a positive test for methamphetamine.

What is Ecstasy?

Ecstasy (MDMA) has become a popular recreational drug among teenagers and young adults.  It  is a refined processed form of amphetamine with a chemical structure closely resembling methamphetamine.

Any test with a target screen for methamphetamine should detect Ecstasy although a MDMA specific screen is preferred.

What does PCP mean?

This is the abbreviation for phencyclidine, which is an arylcyclohexylamine.  Some of the street names are:

  • Angel dust
  • Sherms
  • Star dust
  • Magic dust
  • Dust
  • Silver/gold glitters
What drugs could interfere and cause a positive morphine (opiates) test?

Codeine and Meperidine are structurally related to morphine so they will cause positive results.

Codeine is also a commonly prescribed pain medication and is also the active ingredient in some prescription cough medicines.  These forms of codeine can also be addictive and abused.

Is it possible for a donor to test positive for THC after exposure to second hand smoke?

No.

Urine concentrations of THC for a positive test results are not possible by exposure to second hand smoke.

Is it possible for a donor to test positive for opiates after eating poppy seed bagels or other foods containing poppy seeds?

If the sensitivity cutoff level of the test is the revised standard of 2000 ng/ml OPI, this is not possible.

Sensitivity standards were raised in the year 2000 from 300 ng/ml to 2000 ng/ml OPI to eliminate the possibility of false positive results that were possible from consumption of large quantities of poppy seeds or poppy seed paste at the lower sensitivity level.

What are the different types of drug tests available?

The following testing devices are offered by ASC:

  • Alcohol testing
  • Date rape drug testing
  • Drug test controls
  • Hair drug testing
  • Nicotine saliva testing
  • Nicotine urine testing
  • Steroid testing
  • Sweat patch testing
  • Urine drug testing
  • Urine adulterations tests
What is the likelihood that a testing device is defective?

Unexpected test results or failure to obtain test results is the result of user error 98% of the time.

This because of:

  • Failure to follow instructions
  • Inadequate sampling
  • Device contamination
  • Failure to use a timer or other user related factor.

The stringent quality control checks and required random sampling methods mandated by the governmental regulatory authorities during the production process of these devices make the likelihood of receiving a defective test device extremely remote.

Buprenorphine vs Methadone?

In the United States, there are approximately 980,000 opioid dependent long-term users of heroin, therefore it serves as a national health problem that is spread throughout the country. It is essentially a chronic, relapsing disorder.

Some Opioids have a long-acting effect, have a reduced risk of medication misuse and also may be able to control pain. One example is Methadone, which has a half-life of 27 ± 12 hours. It primarily treats opioid addiction and pain. Methadone is essentially a NMDA-receptor antagonist and a μ-opioid receptor agonist. However, there are some factors that confine its use, such as its connection with certain side effects; respiratory depression, cardiac rhythm disturbances, drug overdose, QT interval prolongation, serious arrhythmia and death. Additionally, the other side effects include; constipation, sedation, hyperalgesia, nausea, sweating, vomiting and dizziness. Buprenorphine may be used as a substitute to Methadone as it also treats opioid addiction or pain effectively. Buprenorphine has a half-life of 2.33 ± 0.24 hours and is a μ-opioid receptor agonist and κ-opioid receptor antagonist. Generally, Methadone is more effective in improving outcomes of addiction in patients that are dependent to opioid. Although, buprenorphine has a much better safety profile as the ceiling on its agonist activity decreases the likelihood of overdose death and also respiratory depression. Overall, this results in buprenorphine having an exceeding safety profile as opposed to methadone; buprenorphine also may have a ceiling on its analgesic effects.

The muopioid receptor is affected by buprenorphine; as the dosage increases so does the receptor activation until it reaches a certain level, acting as a partial agonist. Whereas, opioid agonists such as heroin and methadone continuously produce larger receptor activation as the dose increase, however, without reaching a certain level. Chronic opioid users are much less likely to abuse buprenorphine because an antagonist (such as Naloxone [Narcan]) won’t initiate receptor activation regardless of the dosing. Buprenorphine can temporarily block other opioids; it has a fondness for and also gradual detachment from mu-opioid receptors. Due to the affinity, it can cause withdrawal in patients that have used opioids recently, by displacing opioids. Buprenorphine is consumed via the mucosal and gastrointestinal membranes, however, due to the comprehensive metabolism inside the gastrointestinal tract, it has poor bioavailability.

Buprenorphine and methadone have been compared for opioid maintenance through numerous clinical trials. The majority of trials have displayed that buprenorphine (less than 40 mg) is equally as effective as low-dose methadone (also less than 40 mg). In comparison, high-dose methadone (greater than 60 mg) can be more effective than buprenorphine. In contrast, a meta-analysis of five studies comparing the two therapies demonstrated that 8 to 12 mg of buprenorphine is not as effective as 50 to 80 mg of methadone. Moreover, a review by Cochrane in 2004 validated these findings. In summary, based upon findings from the studies, patients in need of higher doses are not suitable for taking buprenorphine.

Advantages of buprenorphine include; potential of less abuse, easily and more widely attainable for office-based treatment programs, higher doses mean lower toxicity risk, less severe after discontinuation.

Advantages of methadone include; generally, more effective in patients with higher tolerances, costs are lower, rates of treatment retention are higher.

Drug cut-off levels?

The duration of time for any drug to be identified is based upon multiple factors inclusive of; frequency of dosing, dose of drug, individual’s metabolism, the matrix tested, cut-off to describe the presence of the drug. In circumstances where drug assays should be legally permissible, defined cut-off levels for drugs are vital.

The level at which the drug test is considered positive refers to the cut-off levels guidelines for drug testing. With regard to initial screening tests and confirmatory investigations, the guidelines have been well established for urine. Compulsory guidelines for drug testing of Federal Employees have been set and published in the Federal Register, USA.

Generally, the duration of identification for drugs inside urine is longer than for oral fluid; however, this does not serve as a surprise, due to the fact that oral fluid drug levels very closely match the pharmacokinetic profile to blood.

In a review with urine and oral fluid collections, of single drug dose studies, identification times of 1.5 to 4 and 5 to 48 hours respectively were displayed. Although, in clinical disciplines, a much longer duration of identification is expected, as more chronic drug use is commonplace. This happens especially with cocaine in oral fluid and urine samples, and with cannabis in urine.

Drug Trends in Adults?

New health challenges have emerged to public health practitioners and program planners, which have subsequently resulted in changes in patterns of drug use. Overall, throughout the world there has been a considerable rise in the development and use of illicit drugs. For example; the United Nations International Drug Control Programmes (UNDCP) estimate that since 1985, the global development of coca leaf has more than doubled and opium poppies have more than tripled. Additionally, new forms of existing drugs, changes in authorizing these drugs and launching and expansion of synthetic drugs, have all created new or intensified current substance related issues. An issue of high concern refers to how injecting drugs now serves as a primary transmission route for HIV.

Due to the advancement in tourism, transportation and communications, in the twentieth century, it is extremely easy to transport people and goods promptly to any part of the world. Whereas, drugs in the nineteenth century were only obtainable where they were produced or close to the source of production. Due to the very high economic benefits of producing and transporting drugs, they are easily obtainable and accessible all over the world. The illegal market for drugs worldwide has been estimated to be worth 100 to 500 billion US$. The UNDCP have estimated 141 million people to be cannabis users worldwide. From a global approach, cannabis is believed to be the most commonly and outspread illicit drug. Approximately one-third of adults have tried cannabis and 10% have used it in the last twelve months, according to national household surveys in the United States.

Cocaine and ‘crack’ cocaine both serve as an example of the worldwide integration of substance use and the periodic nature of drug epidemics. For thousands of years the people of Andean countries in South America were known to chew coca leaves. Cocaine, which was the main alkaloid of coca leaves was separated in 1860. Until the early 1900s, cocaine was used in beverages, tonics and patent medicines that were produced in countries in North America, Europe and in Australia. Around that time in the United States cocaine use had proceeded to stabilise, and in the late 1980s and early 1990s cocaine use, distinctly crack cocaine, had become a dominant illicit drug issue.

Since the 1960s, heroin use has become progressively common in Europe and North America. In these countries, increases in heroin use are generally periodic. For example, in the United Kingdom, a ‘heroin epidemic’ took place in the 1980s, post a period in the 1970s where heroin users were stable and ageing. Such evidence at that current time proposes that heroin use had become progressively typical in the United States.

Amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS), commonly comprising amphetamine, methamphetamine and amphetamine analogues of MDA-type (including MDMA or ecstasy) is an international and progressive phenomenon. Previously, trends in illegal amphetamine use have been recorded in many countries after the second world war. However, in current years there has been a definite increase in the development and use of ATS world-wide.

Alcohol, after tobacco is the most abused and long-established substance, which is accessible in every country, with the exception of isolated areas or the few countries that hold religious prohibitions. Generally, alcohol problems are now reported to be occurring in countries where they did not exist beforehand. Despite the fact that alcohol consumption has declined in several developed countries, it has increased in developing countries; having no previous history of alcohol use and due to weak methods of control, prevention or treatment.

Globally, tobacco continues to generate maximum health damage; there are around 1.1 thousand million smokers worldwide, with roughly one-third of the global population aged 15 years and over, according to WHO. Considerably fewer cigarettes are smoked per day, per smoker in developing countries than in developed countries. During the early 1990s, the average adult per capita consumption was 2590 per year in developed countries, as opposed to 1410 per year in developing countries.

What is fentanyl?

Fentanyl, a prescription drug, refers to a synthetic opioid which is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. It is produced and utilized illegally. Specifically, post-surgery, fentanyl is used for the treatment of severe pain and also chronic pain, similar to morphine; for patients which are tolerant to other opioids. When you require a higher amount of a drug to acquire the desired effects, tolerance occurs. Fentanyl is also known as Actiq, Duragesic and Sublimaze in its prescription form. Moreover, street names for fentanyl include; Apache, China Girl, China White, Dane Fever, Friend, Goodfellas, Jackpot, Murder and Tango & Cash. One of the most common drugs which are involved in the US deaths due to drug overdose are synthetic opioids, including fentanyl. 59.8% of the opioid-related deaths involve fentanyl in 2017, compared to 14.3% in 2010.

How do people use fentanyl?

Fentanyl can be taken as a shot, a patch on the skin or as lozenges sucked by cough drops, when prescribed by a doctor. Illegally used fentanyl, commonly linked to overdoses, is made in labs. It is sold illegally as a powder on paper, poured into eye droppers and nasal sprays or as pills which closely match prescription opioids. Drug dealers also mix fentanyl with other drugs – heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine and MDMA. This is due to that fact that it is cheaper as less is required to produce a high with fentanyl. However, this is a dangerous risk as people may not realize there is fentanyl included in their drugs, which means they may be taking very strong opioids, stronger than what their body is used to leading to overdose.

Effects of Fentanyl

The body’s opioid receptors are in the brain areas which control pain and emptions. Fentanyl binds to these opioid receptors, similar to morphine, heroin and other opioid drugs. After ingesting opioid several times, the sensitivity is reduced as the brain adapts to the drug. This also makes it more difficult to experience pleasure from anything other than the drug. Once addicted, drug use and drug seeking become a necessity. The side affects include; extreme happiness, drowsiness, nausea, confusion, constipation, sedation, breathing problems and unconsciousness.

Can fentanyl use lead to addiction?

Fentanyl is addictive due to its potency. Dependence is classified by withdrawal symptoms which occur once the drug has stopped; therefore, an individual consuming prescription fentanyl by a doctor can experience dependence. Dependence can lead to addition, although it is possible to be dependent on a substance without addiction occurring. Addiction is the most serious form of a substance use disorder (SUD). These are classified by compulsive drug seeking and out of control drug use and can range from mild to severe. Even when drugs cause serious health issues at home, school or work, people continue to use them.

Fentanyl treatments

Behavioural therapies, counselling or medications such as buprenorphine and methadone can treat addiction.

Deaths Involving Fentanyl

During July-December 2016, Fentanyl was identified in 56.3% of 5,152 opioid overdose deaths within 10 states. Additionally, fentanyl was predicted to be a cause of death by the medical examiner in 97.1% of the deaths, out of 2,903 fentanyl-positive deaths.

Drug Testing

Urine, hair and blood tests are amongst the many drug tests which are used to identify fentanyl. A hair test can identify fentanyl for up to 90 days since the last use. An individual can test fentanyl-positive in a urine test for up to 3-4 days. Whereas, blood tests can identify fentanyl use up to 12 hours.

K4 Synthetic Marijuana?

A legal way to get high is very attractive claim for individuals who are looking to enjoy intoxication induced by drugs but do not want to break the law in doing so. A good number of products on specialists shops and online stores are promised to be this legal way of getting high. These products also appeal to the younger demographic of the public who are looking for cheaper and easier ways to get high. One of such products is the K4 synthetic weed. Another major point of attraction for K4 is that it does not show up on drug tests. This product is sold under several different names including Potpourri, Dead or alive, Bad to the bone, Dragon spice, Melon and Mango.

K4 manufacturers avoid liabilities by selling this product as an incense and posting warning labels that these products are not for human consumption. K4 contains synthetic cannabinoids, which are the psychoactive ingredient that is found in cannabis. Therefore, K4 can be regarded as a synthetic kind of marijuana as it produces similar effects to that drug, and most people buy it for its ability to get them high. But unlike marijuana, this product has never been tested on humans and therefore anyone taking this drug is taking a significant risk.

Currently, K4 is legal in the US and other parts of the world. However, the demand for criminalizing the use and supply of K4 is increasing. The dangers of this drug came to limelight when earlier this year, the story of a young man named Rhodesdale hit the media, who lost control and became suicidal following K4 consumption. However, the problem is that once a product is banned, the manufacturers switch to a newer formula that is yet to be illegalized and hence it is easy for them to stay one-step ahead of the law.

Head shops are specialists shops that deal in culture clothing, art, music, and drug paraphernalia such as bongs. These shops usually abide by the law but they will tend to sell all currently legal products that can be used for drug-induced intoxication. These head shops are the most common place to purchase K4. Other shops, including some gas stations and online shops are also viable options for purchasing K4.

As K4 has never been tested on humans means that there is a significant amount risk and uncertainty surrounding its use. Long-term effects of K4 are still unknown as it has not been around long enough. But a number of dangers are already associated with the use of K4, these include intense hallucinations and delirium, nausea and vomiting, Low blood pressure, elevated heart rate that can reach dangerous levels, suicidal thoughts, paranoia, illogical thinking, Feelings of anxiety and impending doom, panic attacks, and reduced coordination and motor skills. Another major danger of K4 usage is that this drug acts as a gateway to more potent and addictive drugs.

As K4 does not appear on drug tests, it can be difficult to detect its usage, especially for parents trying to prevent their children from getting into these drugs. A few giveaways may include strange smells around the house and on clothing, Secretive or strange behavior or Hallucination etc.

Opioids?

What are opioids?

All compounds that tend to bind to opiate receptors are referred as Opioids. Alkaloids like morphine and codeine, which are derived from the opium poppy plant, are generally regarded as opioids. Synthetic opioids such as propoxyphene, fentanyl and methadone also come under the definition of opioids along with semi-synthetic ones. Semi-synthetic opioids are synthesized from other naturally occurring opioids like heroin and oxycodone from morphine and thebaine respectively [1].

What are opioids used for?

The first opioid epidemic in America occurred in the late nineteenth century. Emerging from very different origins, including being used for treating ailments from diarrhea to injuries in the army [2]. They were even used for alleviating hangovers from drinking alcohol. So in a certain way, history is repeating itself with the present opioid crisis. Today, opioids are mainly used for medicinal purposes like as muscle relaxants and pain relievers throughout the globe. For chronic pain related to advanced medical illness, opioids are considered the best option for pain relieving purposes. But on the other hand, the long-term administration of opioids for treating non-cancer chronic pain is still a controversial issue [2].

Opioid Addiction

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health reported that

1- The number of first time abusers of prescription opioids increased from 628,000 in 1990 to 2.4 million in 2004.

2- The emergency room visits involving prescription opioid abuse increased by 45% from 2000 to 2002.

3- Treatment admissions for primary abuse of prescription opioids increased by 186% between 1997 and 2002.

More often than not, a continued use of opioids leads to physical dependence. As the usage continues, the tolerance of the user’s body increases and the body starts needing higher doses of the drug to get the wanted effects. At this stage, withdrawal or even a decrease in dosage results in illness and severe mental and physical strain. Uncontrolled cravings and compulsive use despite understanding all the negative impact becomes normal. This is the addiction stage. Despite the physical and behavioral changes in any person addicted to drugs, they will tend to try to hide their issues from others.

Long term and short term effects

The short-term effects of opioids like Morphine, Oxycodone and Hydrocodone may include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Sedation
  • Feelings of euphoria
  • Dry mouth
  • Headache
  • Constipation
  • Itching
  • Respiratory depression

Long-term side effects and complications that might result from prolonged use of opioid drugs are as follows:

  • Addiction
  • Irregular heartbeat,
  • Increased risk of heart attack
  • Depression
  • Weak bones
  • Hormonal problems
  • Severe abdominal pain.

Chronic use of opioid drugs can result in narcotic bowel syndrome. This condition can symptoms like acute and worsening abdominal pain, constipation, bloating and nausea.

Opioid Overdoses

The slope of drug overdose in America has been increasing for the past two decades. The growth in these overdose deaths since 2000, at the national level was initially mainly due to the natural and semi-synthetic opioids like prescription painkiller like oxycodone and hydrocodone [3]. However, the crisis has evolved in the past few years. Since 2010, very fast increment in the number of overdose deaths due to illicit opioids like heroin and fentanyl has been recorded. Illegally manufactured and trafficked synthetic opioids have outpaced the deaths from other sources. In 2017, 44,659 opioid overdose deaths occurred in the United States [3]. The number of opioid overdose deaths is estimated to have exceed ed62,500 in 2017.

Opioid Costs

According to an analysis released by a nonprofit health research and consulting institute – Altarum,

From 2001 to 2017, the cost of opioid crisis in the USA is estimated to have exceeded by $1 Trillion. Additionally, it is projected that it will increase by an additional $500 Billion by 2020.

These costs are in the form of lost wages, lost productivity, private health care costs, lost tax revenue, additional spending on government health care, social services, education and criminal justice. The greatest cost comes from lost earnings and productivity from overdose deaths —estimated at $800,000 per person based on an average age of 41 among overdose victims. This figure is largely made up of lost wages of workers and productivity losses of employers, but it also weighs on government in the form of lost tax revenue [4]. As the epidemic has moved closer to younger people and to illicit drugs from older people and prescription opioids, this cost has increased.

Opioid Treatment & Withdrawal

The most powerful factor driving opioid dependence and addiction, from a clinical perspective, is opioid withdrawal. Withdrawal symptoms only occur in patients that have developed tolerance. Opioid tolerance is the need to take higher and higher doses of the drugs to get the same desired effect. Opioid tolerance occurs because the brain cells that have opioid receptors on them gradually become less responsive to the opioid stimulation. Treatment of the opioid withdrawal symptoms is highly based on understanding the relation of the withdrawal to the brain’s adjustments to opioids. Some of the medicines used to treat opioid abuse and addiction include methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone. Methadone and buprenorphine can decrease withdrawal symptoms and cravings as they work by acting on the same targets in the brain as other opioids, but they do not make you feel high. Counseling can also be a good source of treatment because it can change your attitude and help build healthy life skills. All these types of treatments are very structured, and usually include several different kinds of counseling and behavioral therapies, along with medicines.

Drug Testing

Medical societies and regulatory agencies have published consensus guidelines in order to mitigate the risks for opioid misuse. These guidelines recommend specific risk-reduction strategies that include written opioid treatment agreements and urine drug testing for patients with chronic pain who may be prescribed long-term opioid medicines. Opioid effects can last for several hours, but due to their short half-live, opiates leave the system quickly. The duration for which an opiate can be detected by tests after administration varies with different factors, including type of ingestion. Typically, prescription opioids come in the form of pills administered orally i.e. they have to pass through the digestive system first. The effects in this case take around an hour to begin. Whereas, methods like injection, smoking or snorting create a much faster and intense effect and they pass through the body much sooner. Another factor that controls the duration of detection is the type of opiate. Vicodin, OxyContin, Morphine, and Codeine some of the most commonly prescribed opioids.

Drug detection times indicate the period after you last took a drug, that drug testing can reveal its presence or resulting metabolites in your specimen. The amount of time that a drug metabolite remains detectable in urine can vary, depending on the following factors:

Amount and Frequency of Use: Single, isolated, small doses are generally detectable at the lower boundary. Chronic and long-term use typically result in detection periods near or at the upper boundary.

Metabolic Rate: Individuals with slower body metabolism are prone to longer drug detection periods.

Body Mass: In general, human metabolism slows with increased body mass, resulting in longer drug detection periods. In addition, THC (marijuana’s active ingredient) and PCP are known to accumulate in fatty lipid tissue. Chronic users, physically inactive users, and individuals with a high percentage of body fat in relation to total body mass are prone to longer drug detection periods for THC and PCP.

Age: In general, human metabolism slows with age, resulting in longer drug detection periods.

Overall Health: In general, human metabolism slows during periods of deteriorating health, resulting in longer drug detection periods.

Drug Tolerance: Users typically metabolize a drug faster once a tolerance to the drug is established.

Urine pH: Urine pH can impact drug detection periods. Typically, highly acidic urine results in shorter drug detection periods.

HairConfirm Drug Test Questions

Does HairConfirm screen for specific drugs?

HairConfirm is a hair drug test that screens for the five most popular classes of drugs of abuse.  The drugs screened for are cocaine (including benzoylecgonine), marijuana, opiates (including codeine, morphine and heroin), amphetamines (including methamphetamines and ecstasy) and phencyclidine (also called PCP or angel dust).  HairConfirm is a beneficial drug screening test for parents who suspect their teen may be abusing substances.  It can also be used during pre-employment drug screening or for any employee drug testing.

Does HairConfirm cover a certain period of time?

HairConfirm screens for drugs that have been used within 90 days of obtaining the hair sample, as opposed to drug tests that require a urinalysis and have a smaller window of detection.  Every half-inch of hair indicates drug use in the previous 30 days.  HairConfirm uses 1.5 inches of hair to detect the presence of drugs in a 90-day time span.  It is very important that hair samples for hair drug tests be taken as close to the scalp as possible so the most recent drug activity is detected.

How does HairConfirm hair drug testing work?

HairConfirm includes complete directions for collecting a usable hair sample to conduct the hair drug test.

Once the hair sample is obtained it is placed in the postage-paid, pre-addressed envelope and mailed to the Drug Testing Laboratory , a CLIA certified laboratory that provides drug testing services ,where the hair is screened for the presence of drugs.

After registering your drug test sample online with the HairConfirm Specimen ID number and passcode you can check for results in the results section of the website.

Does an Accredited Drug Testing Laboratory perform the Hair Drug Test?

HairConfirm hair drug tests are tested and analyzed by a certified Drug Testing Lab. This drug testing Laboratory, has been given accreditation by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments, or CLIA.  A staff of Ph.D. scientists supervises the process of drug testing and approves all findings before they are released.  The Drug Testing Laboratory that tests these hair samples has a strong track record of performing over 1.5 million hair drug tests.

What is the speed of head hair growth?

Research has shown that head hair grows at an average rate of approximately one half inch every month.  In some instances hair may grow slightly slower resulting in a time variance of about one week.  It is important to note that head hair and body hair grow at significantly different rates.  Hair grown below the neck grows much slower than head hair, and therefore body hair is used for drug testing for drug use within the previous year rather than past 90 days and is trusted for their drug testing services.

How long does it take for drug use to present itself in hair?

Based on the average speed of head hair growth of one half inch every month it can take 4-5 days after drugs are used for the affected hair to grow to a length that can be sampled for drug testing.  Head hair samples taken within 4-5 days after drug use can detect if drugs have been used in the past 90 days.  This is an important drug test for pre-employment drug testing, as well as for random employee drug testing.

How are tests performed on people with little or no head hair?

The necessary amount of hair needed for a hair drug test can be taken from more than one area of the head, rather than just one location.  In cases where 1.5 inches of head hair doesnt exist it is possible to use body hair instead.  Due to the significantly slower growth rate of body hair it is only possible to detect drug use sometime within the past year rather than in a specific 90-day period.  If both body hair and head hair are being sampled it is important to refrain from mixing the samples together.

What is the shortest time span for hair drug testing?

In hair sampled from the head drugs can be detected in one half inch of hair, which represents approximately 30 days or one month.  This time frame is only detectable in hair from the head rather than from body hair samples.  This drug test can be beneficial during employment drug screening to detect if an employee has used drugs in the previous 30 days.

Are hair drug test results affected by external exposure to drugs, such as being in the presence of but not personally smoking marijuana?

Positive results for drug use are only found in hair samples that contain both the parent drug and the metabolites, or bi-products of the drug.  In order for metabolites to be found the drug must pass through the body by means of actual consumption rather than exposure.  For the purposes of marijuana drug screening only the presence of the metabolite is analyzed.

Can Over the-counter medications affect hair drug test results?

In the drug screening process it is possible to receive a false positive as a result of over-the-counter medication use due to the enzyme-immunoassay antibodies like those found in a urinalysis.  HairConfirm tests all positive drug tests by performing Gas Chromatography Mass Spectormetry to ensure that there are no false positives.

Is hair color a factor in hair drug testing?

The amount of melanin in the hair is what produces hair color.  Research has shown that the amount of melanin in a hair sample has nothing to do with drug testing and determining if drugs have been used.  Therefore hair color cannot affect the outcome of a hair drug test in any way and should not be a factor in hair drug testing.

Is it possible to test hair that has been chemically treated?

Coloring, perming and bleaching hair does not significantly affect the outcome of hair drug testing.  Occasionally these treatments can lower the quantitative results of a drug test but not dramatically so.  Hair that has been severely damaged by chemical treatments may affect the results, however they can be identified easily and removed from drug testing.

Is there a distinguishable difference between D and L Amphetamine?

L methamphetamine is found in Vick’s Vapor Inhalers and can show a positive result for a methamphetamine drug screening.

D methamphetamine is only found in controlled substances and a positive drug test usually indicates illicit drug use.

HairConfirm Drug Testing Labs can perform tests to distinguish between the types of methamphetamines present in the hair.

Can hair be collected from a hairbrush and submitted for drug testing?

It is inadvisable to use hair collected from a hairbrush for hair drug testing for a number of reasons.  Legally it is not allowed, as a proper chain of custody must be set up for drug screening and testing during employment drug screening.  There is also the risk that the hair may be contaminated or simply doesn’t belong to the person that is being tested.  For parents checking their children for drug use they may submit hair this way but should be aware that the laboratory may discard the sample if not collected and packaged properly.

Is HairConfirm comparable to urine and saliva drug tests?

Hair drug testing differs from urine and saliva drug testing in the length of time from drug use to testing and in the impossibility of tampering with thedrug test to change the results.  Cocaine, methamphetamines, opiates and phencyclidine are processed and undetectable after 72 hours in urine and 48 hours in saliva.  They are, however, present in hair for up to 90 days after drug use.

Is Hair Drug Testing an effective method of detecting drug users?

Studies have shown that hair drug testing has revealed significantly more drug use among those tested than urine drug testing due to the length of time drugs remain in hair vs. urine.

Medical Drug Research indicates that 5 to 10 times as many drug users can be detected during employee drug testing by using hair drug testing instead of urine drug testing.

When are the hair drug test results available?

HairConfirm is the leader in the fastest turnaround time for hair drug testing.  In the standard drug test kit the laboratory receives the sample in the same amount of time it takes to receive first class mail.  In the express drug test kit samples are received the next business day.  It takes 2 business days to process and post results of drug tests once the samples are received at the lab.

Drug Courts and Probation Agencies

ALCOHOL AND DRUG TESTING FOR DRUG COURTS AND PROBATION AGENCIES

Drug courts in the American criminal justice system apply to nonviolent criminal offenders with substance use disorder. These also serve people who are driving while intoxicated (DWI), as well as alcohol– and/or drug-dependent fathers and mothers with pending child welfare cases.

As of 2019, there are more than 3,000 federal, state, county, and tribal drug courts operating across the United States, including the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and Northern Mariana Islands.

Drug courts benefit society by processing substance-using persons—including nonviolent criminal offenders—at a cost much lower than what taxpayers will spend in the traditional court setting. Moreover, drug courts have programs that significantly lower recidivism rates, saving more taxpayer money.

Each year, US drug courts serve an estimated 150,000 participants.

Key Components That Define Drug Courts

There are ten (10) key components that define US drug courts, and these are:

  1. Drug courts integrate alcohol and drug treatment services with the processing of justice-system cases.
  2. Using a non-adversarial approach, the prosecution and the defense counsel together promote public safety, while protecting the due-process rights of participants.
  3. Eligible participants are identified early, and they are promptly placed in the drug court program.
  4. Drug courts provide access to a continuum of alcoholdrug, and similar treatment and rehabilitation services.
  5. Abstinence is monitored by the administration of frequent alcohol and other drug testing.
  6. A coordinated strategy governs drug court responses to the compliance of participants.
  7. Ongoing judicial interaction with each and every drug court participant is essential.
  8. Monitoring and evaluation both measure the achievement of program goals and gauge program effectiveness.
  9. Continuing interdisciplinary education is seen to promote effective drug-court program planning, implementation, and operations.

Correctional Facilities

DRUG TESTING IN CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES

The United States correctional system is a part of the American criminal justice system, and it comprises a network of government agencies that supervise offenders undergoing incarceration or community supervision. One of its tasks is to help inmates get ready for their release, and to prepare for their reentry and reintegration into society.

As its name suggests, the US correctional system corrects, rehabilitates, and reforms individuals brought to federal, state, and local jails and prisons; that is, after they have been sentenced for such crimes as robbery, arson, assault, rape, murder, and drug trafficking. Although the mission sounds easy and pleasant, it is far from it, considering that countless inmates are dangerous, unremorseful, and lacking in sound judgment because of their addiction to illegal substances.

A persistent problem in federal, state, and local corrections facilities is the strong and continuous inflow of narcotics and other prohibited drugs, including “mojo,” heroin, and crack cocaine. The contraband is consumed by inmates who are regular or habitual drug users, as well as previously non-using inmates who have taken to substance dependence as a way of coping with the difficult life behind bars.

How Illicit Drugs Are Smuggled into Jails and Prisons

Despite the law, forbidden substances enter many American jails and prisons freely. This is due to a number of factors, foremost of which is lax security arrangements.

When the corrections officers do not inspect the inmates’ visitors and their belongings properly and thoroughly, they run the risk of letting in illicit drugs that are hidden in the visitors’ bags, food items, toiletries—body cavities even.

A more glaring factor linked to prevalent drug use in incarceration facilities is corruption among the jail guards and prison wardens.

In 2016, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested a total of 68 State of Georgia Department of Corrections officers, who had routinely smuggled marijuana and other prohibited substances into their respective workplaces. The contraband they brought in was for the consumption of inmates, who would pay for it with large sums of money. The corrections officers were later convicted, and their sentences ranged from 366 days to 72 months in prison.

Of the case, US Attorney Byung Jin “BJay” Pak explained, “Smuggling contraband into our state prisons is a dangerous business. It compromises the safety of everyone in the prison—inmates, corrections officers, and other employees.” He further stated that the perpetrators would be held accountable for their “betrayal of the public trust.”

In 2018, a total of 16 officers at the Eastern Correctional Institution in Maryland were convicted of federal racketeering conspiracy. They were found by the court to have accepted bribes, as payment for smuggling in synthetic cannabinoids and other narcotics that were packed in feminine hygiene products and other seemingly innocent objects.

US Attorney Robert K Hur said of the case, “Corrupt correctional officers rip off the taxpayers, endanger their colleagues and inmates, and undermine citizens’ faith in the justice system.”

Statistics: Prevalence of Drug Use, Dependence, and Abuse in US Jails and Prisons

  • As of mid-2019, drug offenders make up 45.3% of the US federal-prisoner population.
  • In 2018, Pennsylvania’s 21 state prisons were locked down, with their mail service suspended, after a number of corrections employees suffered an illness believed to be caused by exposure to synthetic marijuana being smuggled into the facilities for inmate use.
  • In 2017, there were 13 inmates under the supervision of the Arkansas Department of Correction who died of complications related to the use of synthetic marijuana, also known as “K2” and “spice”.
  • In 2017, there were 40 inmates under the supervision of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation who died of overdosing on heroinmethamphetaminefentanyl, or another illicit drug.
  • Between 2001 and 2014, there were 595 federal and state prison inmates who died of drug or alcohol intoxication, and between 2000 and 2013, there were 925 local jail inmates who died of drug or alcohol intoxication.
  • In 2009, 72% of prisoners and 75% of jail inmates were regular drug users, and the top three substances of choice are (from least to most preferred): heroin/opiatescocaine/crack, and marijuana/hashish.
  • In 2001, 1.94% of 167,105 drug-screened federal inmates tested positive for cocaineheroinmethamphetamine, or another illegal substance; even without current figures from relevant agencies, no one will be surprised that this rate has increased.

Why Testing for Illicit Drugs in Jails and Prisons Matters

The US correctional system strives to maintain an environment that is peaceable, orderly, safe, secure, and healthy, especially for the inmates. As such, it works to keep its facilities drug-free in order to minimize the risk of disruptive, potentially harmful behavior within the jail and prison walls.

Apart from preventing violence that can injure people and destroy property, a drug-free correctional setting can significantly reduce the incidence of drug-induced suicide, not to mention drug-related HIV transmission and AIDS infection.

To combat the prevalence of drug use in correctional facilities, government administrators apply a strategy with the following interrelated components:

  • Prevention. Measures to block the smuggling of contraband into the facility premises include installing X-ray machines and other scanning equipment, deploying drug-sniffing dogs, and conducting thorough physical and cell searches.
  • Control. Measures to reduce the flow of illicit drugs into facility premises include sending drug-using inmates to solitary confinement and denying them of visitor privileges; suspending the mail service entirely or in part; and conducting periodic drug screening for inmates, as well as facility employees and contractors.
  • Rehabilitation. Measures include instituting programs for inmates: 1) to educate them on the evils of drug use and dependence; 2) to treat their substance use disorder and help them fully recover from it; and 3) to prepare them for their release as totally reformed individuals and members of the community.

Where absolute prevention is not possible, stepped-up control measures should be taken to face and solve the problem.

This is where drug testing becomes critical.

Drug testing is important because it can:

  • Directly identify the inmates who use illegal substances;
  • Help design the treatment and rehabilitation programs for those in need;
  • Help assess the gravity of the situation in the facility, so administrators can make improvements;
  • Help investigate the drug sources and distribution channels; and
  • Help pinpoint and punish corrections employees who are themselves users and/or who make the smuggling possible.

Types of Drug Tests That Are Appropriate for Correctional Facilities

Accuracy is key in every successful drug test, and this is what correctional facilities look for in screening kits. And given their workload, jail and prison personnel want the drug testing process to be simple, with fast results.

The three (3) types of drug tests are:

  • Hair Drug Test. Although the least-commonly used in the correctional setting, it has the special purpose of indicating long-term use of an illegal substance. It can tell whether or not the subject has taken prohibited drugs within 90 days of the test.
  • Urine Drug Test. This is the most technologically advanced and accurate of the three methods, which is why test subjects avoid it at any cost. It can prove that the subject has taken an illicit drug within a few days of the test. Corrections employees are not required to undergo extensive training to perform the procedure, and all they need to do is collect the urine sample and prepare it for analysis.
  • Saliva Drug Test. This is not as invasive as the Urine Drug Test, and it does not require a urinal for sample collection. Additionally, it is not susceptible to adulteration, and it can tell if the subject has used marijuanacocaine
  • or amphetamine within three days of the test. It can also detect heroin, but only within a few hours of the latest usage.

Why Drug Testing in Correctional Facilities Is Urgent

America is currently waging a war on drugs, and many of its battles are fought in jails and prisons. If correctional environments stopped being drug-free zones, then people within the facility premises would lose their sense of security and safety—with disturbed and dangerous substance users in their midst.

Also, if jails and prisons became saturated with illicit drugs, no correction and rehabilitation would likely take place. Released inmates, especially those convicted for drug offenses, would reintegrate into society unreformed, return to their illegal trade, and endanger the general population all over again.

Correctional facilities, despite resource limitations, thus have no excuse for not participating in the war on drugs.

Sober Homes and Halfway Houses

ALCOHOL AND DRUG TESTING IN SOBER HOMES AND HALFWAY HOUSES

Even if abusers of alcohol or illicit drugs complete an intensive rehabilitation program, the chances of relapse are high when they do not transition through sober homes or halfway houses before their full return to unrestricted environments.

A 2010 study published in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs indicates that the alcohol and drug-free environment provided by sober living homes (SLHs) is likely to help post-treatment substance abusers attain sustained abstinence and find their way to complete recovery.

In SLHs, individuals live structured lives and follow a set of rules, although these conditions are no longer as strict as those in traditional rehabilitation centers. They are given more flexibility as long as they stay sober. They also get to exercise their independence and sound judgment, and they have a support system that offers a range of resources: individual counseling, employment services, assistance with looking for housing, among others.

For SLH programs to be effective, administrators require program participants to take periodic alcohol and/or drug tests.

Types of Tests That Are Appropriate for Sober Homes and Halfway Houses

Accuracy is key in every successful test for alcohol and drugs, and this is what sober homes and halfway houses seek in screening kits. And because time is of the essence, SLH administrators want the screening process to be simple, with fast results.

The three (3) types of alcohol and drug tests are:

Mandatory Alcohol and Drug Testing for Employees of SLHs and Halfway Houses

Transitional communities will only be alcohol and drug-free zones if both the program participants and the employees (including contractual service providers) regularly test for substance abuse and yield negative results.

What American Screening Provides Sober Homes and Halfway Houses

American Screening understands that sober homes and halfway houses may not always have a big budget to perform their tasks, including the periodic administration of alcohol and drug tests. This is why we deliver highly affordable, superior-quality screening kits straight from the manufacturer.

Staffing Agencies

PRE-EMPLOYMENT ALCOHOL AND DRUG TESTING FOR STAFFING AGENCIES

With American companies losing billions of dollars each year due to their employees’ alcohol and drug use, no employers in their right mind will hire people with substance dependence. When employees use and abuse alcohol and/or illicit drugs, their judgment is impaired and their chances of making costly mistakes at work are high.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), some problems that arise in the workplace are:

  • Employee absenteeism
  • Lost productivity
  • Jobsite accidents and injuries
  • Increased risk of illness
  • Low morale in the organization

Given the situation, most US companies require staffing agencies to supply them only with human resources who are sober, possess sound judgment, and contribute to safe working environments that are alcohol and drug-free.

It is for staffing agencies to prove their mettle, and this is by conducting the necessary pre-employment alcohol and drug screens, as well as recommending no less than the most ideal job candidates.

Statistics: Alcohol and Drug Use and Abuse in the American Workplace

  • Between 2007 and 2013, the health care and social assistance industry had the lowest number of heavy drinkers of alcoholic beverages, with only 4.4% of the employees having at least five drinks on the same occasion.
  • Between 2007 and 2013, the public administration industry had the lowest number of drug users, with only 4.3% of the employees into marijuana/hashishheroinhallucinogens, inhalants, cocaine (including crack), or non-medically administered prescription drugs.
  • From 2008 to 2012, the five industries with the most number of heavy-drinking workers were: mining; construction; accommodations and food services; arts, entertainment, and recreation; and utilities.
  • From 2008 to 2012, the five industries with the most number of users of illicit drugs: accommodations and food services; arts, entertainment, and recreation; information; construction; real estate, rental, and leasing.

Workplace Testing

ALCOHOL AND DRUG TESTING FOR THE WORKPLACE

No employers in their right mind will hire and keep users and abusers of alcohol, non-medically administered prescription drugs, and/or illicit drugs. This is because American companies lose tens of billions of dollars each year because of their employees’ substance use and abuse.

Employees who take to alcohol and drugs are likely to have an impaired judgment. As such, their chances of making expensive mistakes at work are very high. They also compromise the safety and security of their colleagues, not to mention the clients and other stakeholders.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), problems that arise in the workplace include:

  • Lost productivity
  • Employee absenteeism
  • Jobsite accidents
  • Increased illness
  • Low morale within the workforce

Given the situation, US companies that aspire to thrive and flourish—without the unnecessary substance-related obstacles—conduct the necessary alcohol and drug screens every so often. The procedures promote and ensure an alcohol and drug-free workplace.

Statistics: Alcohol and Drug Use and Abuse in America’s Workplace

Types of Alcohol and Drug Testing in the Workplace

There is no law that requires private employers, except federal grantees and contractors, to maintain a drug-free environment. However, keeping the workplace alcohol and drug-free prevents costly damage wreaked by problems associated with employee substance use and abuse.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) provides guidelines to make sure that the substance-use testing is within legal boundaries.

Below are some types of alcohol and drug testing in the workplace:

  • Pre-Employment. This takes place during the selection of job candidates. An employer has the right to refuse hiring a person who fails the alcohol or drug test.
  • Pre-Duty. This takes place when an employee is about to begin performing duties in a unit where safety is critical.
  • Return-to-Duty. This takes place when an employee goes back to work from situations like substance use disorder treatment.
  • Post-Incident. This is performed when an untoward work-related incident occurs, to see if any potential damage to property or a resulting injury, has been due to an employee’s alcohol or drug use.
  • Periodic. The alcohol or drug testing is performed on a regular basis, but ideally unannounced, to see to it that employees are consistently free from substance use and abuse.
  • Random. The alcohol or drug testing is performed unannounced across the workforce to see to it that employees are consistently free from substance use and abuse.

Types of Tests That Are Appropriate for the Workplace

Accuracy is key in every successful alcohol and drug screen, and this is what employers seek in screening kits. And because time is of the essence, personnel who perform the tests want the process to be swift and simple.

The three (3) types of alcohol and drug tests are:

  • Hair Follicle Alcohol and Drug Test. This can tell whether or not the prospective employee being screened has taken alcohol or drugs within 90 days of the test.
  • Urine Alcohol and Drug Test. This can prove that the prospective employee being screened has imbibed alcohol or taken an illicit drug within a few days of the test.
  • Saliva Alcohol and Drug Test. This is not as invasive as the Urine Drug Test, and it does not require a private room for collecting the sample. It can tell if the prospective employee being screened has used alcohol, marijuanacocaine, or amphetamine within three days of the test. It can also detect heroin, but only within a few hours of the latest usage.

Casinos

ALCOHOL AND DRUG TESTING FOR CASINOS

The United States is one of the world’s largest gambling markets, and it caters to local and international patrons. The casino industry alone generates an annual revenue of $261 billion, according to the American Gaming Association, and it encompasses commercial and tribal casinos.

Casinos are usually housed in hotels, and many are open 24/7. It employs at least 360,000 workers with a mean income of $47,200.00.

The glitzy and vibrant casino environment is demanding, and owing to this, employees often put in long hours. And because they can very well afford certain diversions to cope with work-related stress, many of them take to using, misusing, and/or abusing substances, including alcohol and illicit drugs.

Impact of Substance Use, Misuse, and Abuse in the Casino Industry

Casinos suffer the adverse effects of substance use, misuse, and abuse in the workforce, such as:

  • Lost opportunity due to employee tardiness or absenteeism
  • Lost revenue due to an employee’s poor concentration, weak performance, even commission of theft
  • Lost time and other resources due to the imposition of disciplinary actions
  • Lost resources due to increased security when the gaming area is at risk of staff-caused aggression and violence
  • Lost resources due to training new staff as a result of high employee turnover

Moreover, casinos are likely to turn into sources and trading places for regulated and prohibited substances when its workers are into alcohol and drugs.

Types of Tests That Are Appropriate for the Casino Industry

Accuracy is key in every successful alcohol and drug screen, and this is what casino administrators seek in screening kits for their employees. And because time is of the essence, the staff assigned to perform the tests want the process to be swift, seamless, and simple.

Clinical Settings

DRUG TESTING SOLUTIONS IN CLINICAL SETTINGS

American Screening Corporation is one with laboratories, clinics, hospitals, along with other types of treatment, rehabilitation, and recovery centers, in advocating safe and proper patient care. To this end, we make sure that our tests yield results that are accurate, timely, and trustworthy.

Apart from providing screening kits for alcohol and illicit-drug use, we deliver products that help detect the presence of non-medically administered prescription drugs in the subjects.

Prescription drugs can be misused and abused, and the wrong consumption of such can lead to health complications or even death. The non-medical or recreational use of prescription drugs, particularly opioids, in the United States has become so rampant and deadly that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has referred to the situation as the “opioid overdose epidemic.”

Statistics on the Use, Misuse, and Abuse of Prescription Drugs in the US

  • In 2017, about 18 million people used prescription drugs non-medically or recreationally at least once.
  • Also in 2017, 14.4% of young adults (aged 18 to 25) and 4.9% of adolescents (aged 12 to 17) used prescription drugs non-medically or recreationally.
  • Every day, an estimated 5,480 Americans use prescription pain relievers non-medically or recreationally for the first time.
  • Every day, an estimated 4,110 Americans use prescription tranquilizers non-medically or recreationally for the first time.
  • Every day, an estimated 2,740 Americans use prescription stimulants non-medically or recreationally for the first time.
  • Every day, an estimated 738 Americans use prescription sedatives non-medically or recreationally for the first time.
  • Every day, about 130 Americans die from overdosing on either a prescription opioid or an illicit opioid.

Government Initiatives To Combat the Opioid Overdose Epidemic

The CDC works with state governments and Washington DC to deliver interventions that improve the opioid situation. One of the current prevention and control measures is the prescription drug-monitoring program (PDMP) being implemented at state level.

A PDMP is an electronic database that tracks the statewide prescriptions of controlled substances, and it involves the state’s health, insurance, and law enforcement departments; healthcare licensure boards; healthcare providers; and pharmacies.

A PDMP dispenses timely information on the prescribing behaviors of physicians and the prescription histories of patients, so health authorities can make a targeted and nimble response on any anomaly. It also gives insights to health care providers, so they can assess whether or not dosage reductions or total prescription revisions are necessary for patients in question.

Types of Tests We Offer for Clinical Management

American Screening contributes to the complete cure of the drug crisis, especially in measuring the effectiveness and success of PDMPs, and we do this by helping health care providers quickly detect the presence of drugs in the patients’ system.

Our safe, well-designed products comply with government regulations, and many of these are FDA-approved, CLIA-waived, CE-marked, and Health Canada-checked.

The types of substance tests are:

  • Urine Test Cups. These are technologically advanced and can tell if the patient being screened has taken certain prescription or illicit drugs within 72 hours of the test.
  • Urine Dip Cards. Like the Urine Test Cups, these can tell if the patient being screened has taken certain prescription or illicit drugs within 72 hours of the test.
  • Saliva Drug Tests. These are not as invasive and potentially messy as the Urine Drug Tests, which require a urinal or a private room for collecting samples. It can tell whether or not the patient being screened has taken certain prescription or illicit drugs within 24 hours of the test.

What American Screening Provides Clinics, Hospitals, and Laboratories

American Screening understands that laboratories, clinics, hospitals, along with other types of treatment, rehabilitation, and recovery centers across the country may not always have a large budget for patient alcohol and drug tests. This is why we deliver affordable, no-frills screening kits direct from the manufacturer.

We understand as well that the staff who perform the screening do not have the luxury of time to learn the complexities of drug testing, which is why we provide easy-to-use products with clear instructions. These give timely and accurate results.

Construction

ALCOHOL AND DRUG TESTING FOR THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

The construction industry contributes substantially to the American economy. In 2018, it provided 7.8 million jobs to build or rebuild residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial, structures, as well as roads, bridges, and other infrastructure. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, its employment rate is seen to trend upward in the coming years.

The $2-trillion-a-year construction industry faces bright prospects overall, but it has a dark side that affects direct and indirect stakeholders, not to mention the general public.

The problem: substance abuse among workers, which mostly involves alcohol and illicit drugs.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the construction industry between 2007 and 2013 had the second highest number of heavy-drinking workers—next to mining. It also had the fourth highest number of users of illicit drugs—next to information; arts, entertainment, and recreation; and accommodations and food services.

The figures have changed over time, but seemingly for the worse. Currently, the added concern is the increased non-medical usage of prescription drugs, especially pain killers, to manage the pain associated with the physically demanding construction work.

Impact of Substance Use, Misuse, and Abuse in the Construction Industry

The field of construction is already dangerous in itself, but it gets more hazardous when its workers use, misuse, and abuse controlled and/or prohibited substances.

Some of the adverse effects of alcohol and drug consumption in the industry are:

  • Lost opportunity and revenue due to employee tardiness or absenteeism
  • Lost resources due to the imposition of disciplinary actions on erring employees
  • Increased risk of accidents and other untoward incidents in the project sites due to impaired judgment of substance-using employees
  • Increased risk of costly mistakes due to poor concentration and weak performance of employees under the influence
  • Low morale and sense of security among coworkers

Types of Tests That Are Appropriate for the Construction Industry

Accuracy is key in every successful alcohol and drug screen, and this is what the construction industry seeks in testing kits for the workers. And because time is of the essence, the staff assigned to perform the tests want the procedure to be swift, seamless, and simple.

Corporate

ALCOHOL AND DRUG TESTING IN THE CORPORATE SETTING

The corporate setting is known to be characterized by a strait-laced culture and a set of very strict moral attitudes, but this is not at all exempt from substance use, misuse, and abuse. And within this environment, the risk is the same for blue-collar operatives (such as janitors), pink-collar employees (such as secretaries), and white-collar professionals (including the C-suite executives).

Among workers in the corporate setting, especially the white-collar professionals, the likelihood of substance abuse is usually associated with the following:

  • Drive to succeed
  • Pressure to gain recognition and wealth
  • Need to celebrate career milestones and gains
  • Need to build and expand networks
  • Need to cope with long work hours, excessive workload, and work-related stress

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) estimates that substance abuse costs the United States $600 billion annually, and it believes that treatment mitigates the economic and social impact significantly.

Meanwhile, the National Safety Council states that alcohol and drug use in the workplace reduces employer revenue by at least $74 billion each year. When workers, including white-collar professionals, consume controlled or prohibited substances, they are likely to perform poorly, lose their productivity, and make unsound decisions that result in costly mistakes.

Statistics: Alcohol and Drug Use and Abuse Among White-Collar Professionals

  • According to the 2015 report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA), from 2008 to 2012, 9.9% of middle- and high-level managers of various types of enterprises were found to be heavy drinkers.
  • Also according to the SAMHSA report, from 2008 to 2012, 12.1% of middle- and high-level managers of various types of enterprises were found to use illicit drugs, such as marijuana/hashishhallucinogens, inhalants, heroincocaine (including crack), or non-medically administered prescription drugs.
  • According to a 2015 study published in The American Journal on Addictions, 12.9% of male physicians and 21.4% female physicians in the United States suffer from alcohol abuse or dependence.
  • According to a 2016 study published in the Journal of Addiction Medicine, 20.6% of American attorneys have “problematic drinking” issues.
  • Also according to a 2016 study published in the Journal of Addiction Medicine, 31% of American attorneys consume marijuana, and 21.6% take opioids, all on a weekly basis.
  • Per NIDA data, about 130 Americans die from overdosing on either a prescription opioid or an illicit opioid; the figure includes individuals in the corporate environment.

Types of Tests That Are Appropriate for the Corporate Setting

Accuracy is key in successful alcohol and drug screens, and this is what corporate decision-makers and executives seek in screening kits. And because time is of the essence, the staff performing the tests want the process to be swift and simple.

The three (3) types of alcohol and drug tests are:

Types of Alcohol and Drug Testing in Corporate Environments

There is no law that requires corporate environments, except federal grantees and contractors, to maintain a drug-free workplace. However, keeping the workplace alcohol and drug-free prevents irreversible damage and harm due to problems associated with employee substance use and abuse.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) provides guidelines to make sure that the substance-use testing is within legal boundaries.

Below are some types of alcohol and drug testing for employees:

  • Pre-Employment. This is performed during the selection of job candidates. Employers have the right to refuse hiring persons who fail the alcohol or drug test.
  • Pre-Duty. This is performed when employees are about to begin performing duties in a unit that they have not worked in previously.
  • Return-to-Duty. This is performed when employees goes back to work from certain situations, such as substance use disorder treatment.
  • Post-Incident. This is performed when an untoward work-related incident occurs, to see if a resulting injury, or any potential or actual damage to property, has been caused by an employee’s alcohol or drug use.
  • Periodic. The alcohol or drug testing is performed on a regular basis, although ideally unannounced, to make sure that the employees are consistently free from substance use, misuse, or abuse.
  • Random. The alcohol or drug testing is performed at work unannounced, to make sure that the employees are consistently free from substance use, misuse, or abuse.

Drugstores and Pharmacies

ALCOHOL AND DRUG TESTS SOLD BY DRUGSTORES AND PHARMACIES

Drugstores and pharmacies both sell medicines, although pharmacies distinguish themselves from drugstores by selling prescription-only and some over-the-counter (OTC) drugs. Drugstores, meanwhile, carry OTC drugs and certain other healthcare products, along with beauty products, food items, and various other consumer goods.

In any case, both drugstores and pharmacies can—and should—sell tests and screening kits to detect alcohol, illicit drugs, and other substances deemed harmful to the human body. This is a way to help combat the nationwide substance-use and -abuse problem, which causes the nation to lose at least $740 billion annually and countless lives.

When drugstores and pharmacies dispense alcohol and drug testing products, not only do they carry out a social obligation; they also generate more income.

The Drugstore and Pharmacy Industry and the Prevalence of Substance Use Disorders

The drugstore and pharmacy industry earns an estimated $313 billion a year. It is expected to grow bigger in the coming years due to a number of factors, including increasing healthcare needs and the prevalence of substance use disorders (SUDs).

SUDs involve prohibited drugs, non-medically administered prescription drugs, alcohol, and even tobacco. These affect people of all ages, from all walks of life. The direct and indirect victims include the substance users themselves, their families and neighbors, their social circles and professional networks, and the community as a whole.

In the workplace, for example, SUDs translate to poor performance, lost productivity, heightened risk of accidents, and highly insecure working conditions. Employees who suffer from alcohol or drug dependence usually have impaired judgment and the tendency to be violent. Their unpleasant behavior will likely instill fear and cause stress among their coworkers, and it will lower the morale level of the whole organization.

As the National Safety Council reports, alcohol and drug use and abuse in the workplace reduces employer revenue by about $74 billion annually. So, to protect their business interests—as well as their human resources and stakeholders—the bosses turn to screening kits. The tests will help identify employees needing treatment, disciplinary action, or, in hopeless conditions, the pink slip.

Schools and homes are a different matter altogether, with many of these are also adversely affected by SUDs.

It is during these crucial times that individuals, families, and organizations turn to suppliers and distributors of testing products, such as drugstores and pharmacies.

Alcohol and drug testing is the first step to treatment and recovery.

Statistics: SUDs in the United States

  • According to the 2017 report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA), in 2014, 16.3 million adults (most of whom are working) were found to be heavy drinkers.
  • Also according to the 2017 SAMHSA report, in 2014, 6.2 million adults (most of whom are working) were found to be into marijuana/hashish, inhalants, hallucinogenscocaine (including crack), heroin, or prescription drugs taken non-medically.
  • An Office of Population Affairs report indicates that in 2017, 41% of the high school population (grades 9-12) had tried to quit using tobacco products, such as cigarettes, shisha or hookah tobacco, and electronic vapor products.
  • The same Office of Population Affairs report indicates that in 2017, 13% of the high school population had been binge drinking at least once, having consumed at least 4 alcoholic drinks in a row within a couple of hours on one occasion.
  • Also in 2017, 36% of the high school population had tried smoking marijuana, 6% had tried inhalants, and 5% had tried cocaine in any form. In 2015-2016, 4% had misused pain relievers on at least one occasion.
  • In 2015-2016, 2% of the high school population admitted they needed but did not receive treatment for alcohol consumption, while 3% said they needed but did not receive treatment for illicit-drug use.

Types of Tests That Drugstores and Pharmacies Must Carry

Accuracy and effectiveness are key in every successful alcohol and drug screen, and these are what employers seek in the testing kits. They also want the process to be swift and simple.

Energy and Utilities

ALCOHOL AND DRUG TESTING FOR THE UTILITIES INDUSTRY

A large part of the United States population depends on energy and utilities to increase the quality of life.

The industry provides electricity, natural gas, steam, and water, as well as sewage-removal services. Per Bureau of Labor Statistics data for June 2019, its workforce comprises 554,800 employees, who put in average weekly hours of 42.6 and earn average hourly wages of $41.79.

Given its importance to the nation, the industry expects its workers to be at the top of their game, so they can consistently perform their tasks well—without making costly mistakes, damaging property, and endangering lives. Although there are safety and security measures in place to achieve industry goals and bring excellent services, problems still arise, including substance use and abuse.

Statistics: Alcohol and Drug Use, Misuse, and Abuse in the American Utilities Industry

  • The 2015 report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) suggests that between 2007 and 2013, the utilities industry had the fifth highest number of heavy drinkers of alcoholic beverages in the US workforce, with 10.3% of the employees having at least five drinks on the same occasion.
  • The SAMHSA report also suggests that between 2007 and 2013, the utilities industry had the 13th highest number of illicit-drug users in the US workforce, with 6.1% of the employees into marijuana/hashish, inhalants, hallucinogens, cocaine (including crack), heroin, or prescription drugs taken non-medically.

Impact of Substance Use, Misuse, and Abuse in the United States Utilities Industry

The energy and utilities sector is already inherently dangerous, but it gets more hazardous when members of its labor force use, misuse, and abuse controlled and/or prohibited substances.

The adverse effects of alcohol and drug consumption in the industry include:

  • Lost opportunity and revenue due to workers being habitually tardy or absent
  • Lost resources associated with imposing disciplinary actions on erring workers
  • Increased risk of unintentional bodily injury or property damage due to the impaired judgment of workers under the influence
  • Increased risk of workplace mistakes due to lack of focus and poor performance of workers under the influence
  • Low morale level and sense of security within the organization
  • Reduced trust of clients and the community

Types of Tests That Are Appropriate for the Utilities Industry

Accuracy is key in every successful alcohol and drug screen, and this is what employers seek in screening kits. And because time is of the essence, personnel who perform the tests want the process to be simple and swift.

Government Agencies

ALCOHOL AND DRUG TESTING FOR GOVERNMENT AGENCIES

Public office is a public trust, not only for the President of the United States but for everyone in any branch of government. This holds true at the federal, state, and local levels, and it applies to all civilian and military units.

Workers in the public sector are expected to demonstrate integrity, be of good moral character, and abide by the laws of the nation and the policies of their respective institutions. When they behave against the rules, regulations, and guidelines intended for the common good, they become public charges.

For example, if government workers use and abuse alcohol and illicit drugs, their judgment becomes clouded, their productivity is weakened, and their overall performance becomes very poor. In this case, they will be unable to perform tasks in a timely manner, thus affecting the bureaucracy and the people they serve.

Statistics: Alcohol and Drug Use, Misuse, and Abuse in America’s Public Sector

  • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), in 2016, the public sector had 22.2 million civilian employees at the federal, state, and local levels, plus 1.3 million active-duty military personnel.
  • The 2015 report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) suggests that from 2008 to 2012, 6.6% of employees in the public sector (or public administration industry) were heavy drinkers.
  • The same 2015 SAMHSA report suggests that from 2008 to 2012, 4.3% of employees in the public sector (or public administration industry) were into illicit drugs, such as marijuana/hashish, inhalants, hallucinogenscocaine (including crack), heroin, and prescription drugs taken non-medically.
  • According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (or NIDA), in 2008, close to half of active-duty military personnel engaged in binge drinking at least once during the year, while 2.3% of the military population consumed illicit drugs at least once during the year.

Types of Tests That Are Appropriate for Government Agencies

Accuracy is key in every successful alcohol and drug screen, whether in public administration or the public sector, and this is what institutions and organization heads seek in screening kits. And because time is of the essence, the staff assigned to conduct the tests want the process to be swift and simple.

The three (3) types of alcohol and drug tests are:

Tests for the Federal Workplace

At the federal level, which has mandatory drug-testing programs, the Urine Drug Test is used to screen employees and contractors. The samples are analyzed by laboratories certified by the Department of Health and Human Services.

The Saliva Drug Test, however, is used when it is not possible to collect a urine sample from the subject.

In the new guidelines, the urine screening kits must be able to detect additional Schedule II drugs indicated in the Controlled Substances Act: oxymorphone, oxycodone, hydromorphone, and hydrocodone).

What American Screening Provides Government Agencies

American Screening understands that workplaces in the public sector—at federal, state, and local levels—may not have a huge budget to test employees for alcohol and illicit drugs. Homeless Shelters

ALCOHOL AND DRUG TESTING FOR HOMELESS SHELTERS

About 550,000 adults and children across America experience homelessness, according to the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness. They have found themselves in this extremely difficult “undomiciled” situation for a variety of reasons, and their number includes disabled persons and military veterans.

It is estimated that more than half the homeless population have alcohol and drug problems, some of which have been caused by despair and hopelessness, and these must be addressed and stopped altogether.

Types of Tests That Are Appropriate for Homeless Shelters

Accuracy is key in every successful alcohol and drug screen, and this is what organizations and communities seek in screening kits. And because time is of the essence, the people who conduct the tests want the process to be swift and simple.

 Hospitality

ALCOHOL AND DRUG TESTING FOR THE LEISURE AND HOSPITALITY SUPERSECTOR

The Bureau of Labor Statistics classifies the leisure and hospitality space as a “supersector” that consists of the service-providing Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation industry and the Accommodation and Food Services industry.

This vibrant supersector generates hundreds of billions of dollars a year. Per Bureau of Labor Statistics data for June 2019, its workforce comprises 16.7 million employees, who put in average weekly hours of 25.9 and earn average hourly wages of $16.56.

Businesses in the leisure and hospitality space generally project an upbeat aura. Their goal, after all, is to serve people of any age and from any place in the world, who want to relax, unwind, de-stress, and have fun.

It is thus ironic that work environments in this supersector are highly affected by the alcohol and drug-abuse malady. But this is reality, and it must be addressed and stopped altogether.

Statistics: Alcohol and Drug Use, Misuse, and Abuse in the Leisure and Hospitality Supersector

  • The 2015 report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) suggests that between 2007 and 2013, the accommodations and food services industry had the third highest number of heavy drinkers of alcoholic beverages in the US workforce, with 11.8% of its employees having at least five drinks on the same occasion.
  • The same SAMHSA report suggests that between 2007 and 2013, the arts, entertainment, and recreation industry had the fourth highest number of heavy drinkers of alcoholic beverages in the US workforce, with 11.5% of its employees having at least five drinks on the same occasion.
  • The SAMHSA report also suggests that between 2007 and 2013, the accommodations and food services industry had the highest number of illicit-drug users in the US workforce, with 19.1% of its employees into marijuana/hashish, inhalants, hallucinogenscocaine (including crack), heroin, or prescription drugs taken non-medically.
  • Still according to the SAMHSA report, between 2007 and 2013, the arts, entertainment, and recreation industry had the second number of illicit-drug users in the US workforce, with 13.7% of its employees into marijuana/hashish, inhalants, hallucinogenscocaine (including crack), heroin, or prescription drugs taken non-medically.

Impact of Substance Use, Misuse, and Abuse in the Leisure and Hospitality Supersector

The adverse effects of alcohol and drug consumption in the Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation industry, as well as the Accommodation and Food Services industry, include:

  • Lost revenue and opportunity due to employee tardiness and absenteeism
  • Lost resources associated with sanctioning erring workers
  • Increased risk of unintentional bodily injury or property damage due to the impaired judgment of employees under the influence
  • Increased risk of costly workplace mistakes due to lack of focus and poor performance of employees under the influence
  • Low morale level and sense of security among coworkers
  • Reduced trust of clients, other stakeholders, and the community as a whole

It is also possible for the workplace to be used as a trading post for controlled and prohibited substances—endangering businesses even more.

Types of Tests That Are Appropriate for the Leisure and Hospitality Supersector

Accuracy and efficiency are key in every successful alcohol and drug screen, and these are exactly what employers seek in screening kits. And because time is of the essence, the personnel who conduct the tests want the process to be simple and swift.

Manufacturing

ALCOHOL AND DRUG TESTING FOR THE MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY

America’s manufacturing industry generates trillions of dollars each year, and it is as significant to the nation as it is to the world. Through this field, materials and components are physically, mechanically, or chemically transformed into new products that improve the quality of life.

Per Bureau of Labor Statistics data for June 2019, the industry’s workforce comprises 12.85 million employees, who put in average weekly hours of 40.7 and earn average hourly wages of $27.67.

Given its importance, the industry expects its workers to be always at the top of their game. Businesses want their employees to perform their tasks consistently well—without them making expensive mistakes, damaging property and infrastructure, and endangering human lives and the environment.

Most likely, employers have a range of safety and security measures in place to achieve industry goals and bring exceptional services. Despite these measures, however, problems still arise, including substance use and abuse.

Statistics: Alcohol and Drug Use, Misuse, and Abuse in the Manufacturing Industry

  • The 2015 report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) suggests that between 2007 and 2013, the manufacturing industry had the eighth highest number of heavy drinkers of alcoholic beverages in the US workforce, with 9.7% of its employees having at least five drinks on the same occasion.
  • The same SAMHSA report also suggests that between 2007 and 2013, the manufacturing industry had the eleventh highest number of illicit-drug users in the US workforce, with 7.4% of its employees having consumed marijuana/hashish, inhalants, hallucinogenscocaine (including crack), heroin, or prescription drugs taken non-medically at least once during the period.

Impact of Substance Use, Misuse, and Abuse in the Manufacturing Industry

The adverse effects of alcohol and drug consumption in the manufacturing industry, as well as the Accommodation and Food Services industry, include:

  • Lost revenue and opportunity as a result of worker tardiness and absenteeism
  • Lost resources as a result of sanctioning drunken or drugged workers
  • Increased risk of unintentional bodily injury or property damage as a result of impaired judgment of workers under the influence
  • Increased risk of costly workplace mistakes as a result of lack of focus and weak performance of workers under the influence
  • Low morale level and sense of security in the workplace
  • Reduced trust of clients and other stakeholders

Quite disturbingly, it is possible for the workplace to be used as a trading post for controlled and prohibited substances. This endangers businesses even more.

Types of Tests That Are Appropriate for the Manufacturing Industry

Pain Management Centers

DRUG TESTING FOR PAIN MANAGEMENT CENTERS

Pain management centers are clinical environments where people get treatments for acute and/or chronic pain, which results from injuries, inflammatory conditions, cancer, surgery, or several other causes. The clinics are designed to make the lives of patients easier and—as their classification suggests—a lot less painful (if not completely pain-free).

To attain goals, pain management centers turn to a number of solutions: aromatherapy, acupuncture, aquatic therapy, chiropractic treatment, electrical stimulation, heat application, physical therapy, among others. These also administer analgesics and anesthetic agents—antidepressants even—and over-the-counter medications, such as non-aspirin pain relievers and non-sterodial anti-inflammatory drugs (or NSAIDs).

In more severe cases, physicians prescribe corticosteroids and opioids.

If left unmonitored, the medications that are intended to improve a patient’s health could turn into deadly poison instead.

For this reason, pain management centers must regularly test their patients for prescription-drug misuse and abuse. Otherwise, these clinics will likely be seen as “pill mills” and unlawful “sponsors of drug diversion.”

Statistics on the Use, Misuse, and Abuse of Prescription Drugs in the US

  • According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), in 2017, about 18 million people have misused prescription medications at least once during the period.
  • Also according to NIDA, in 2017, about 6% of the people who have misused prescription medications at least once during the period were below 12 years old.
  • According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), every day, an estimated 5,480 Americans use prescription pain relievers non-medically or recreationally for the first time.
  • Also according to CDC, between 1999 and 2016, most of the 630,000-plus cases of drug-overdose deaths involved opioids prescribed for pain.

Testing Times for Patients of Pain Clinics

Pain management centers play a big role in preventing and controlling drug diversion, or the non-medical administration of prescription medications.

The following are the best times to perform the drug tests:

  • Evaluation. Patients are thoroughly examined and evaluated on their first visit, and the procedures should include drug testing. It has been noted in the pain-management community that there are individuals faking symptoms and documentation to get their fill of prescription opioids for recreational purposes.
  • Throughout the Course of Treatment. The periodic assessment of the patients’ health conditions is necessary, to see if there are improvements or if there is a need to revise the prescriptions. Physicians should order regular drug tests to make sure that they are giving the correct medication and dosage at every stage of the treatment.

The regularity of tests is consistent with prescription drug-monitoring programs (PDMPs) being implemented at state level. A PDMP involves an electronic database that tracks the prescriptions of controlled substances, and it has a network that consists of the state’s health, insurance, and law enforcement departments; healthcare licensure boards; healthcare providers; and pharmacies.

Additionally, drug testing in pain-management settings is attuned to the ideals of the Opioid Analgesic Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS), approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in September 2018.

Like PDMPs, the Opioid Analgesic REMS involves stakeholders statewide. Its overarching goal is to prevent and control (if not totally eliminate) the abuse and misuse of prescription opioid analgesics that can lead to overdose deaths.

Types of Tests That Are Appropriate for Pain Clinics

Accuracy and efficiency are key in every successful drug screen, and these are what pain-management administrators seek in screening kits. And because time is of the essence, the staff assigned to perform the tests want the process to be swift and very simple.

The three (3) types of drug tests are:

  • Hair Follicle Drug Test. This can tell whether or not the subject has taken drugs within 90 days of the test.
  • Urine Alcohol Test. The most popular drug-testing tool in pain management settings, it can detect the presence of a number of drug metabolites with a single sample. It can prove that the subject has taken illicit drugs within a few days of the test.
  • Saliva Drug Test. This is not as invasive as the Urine Drug Test, and it does not require a private room for sample collection. It can tell if the subject has used alcoholmarijuanacocaine, or amphetamine within three days of the test. It can also detect heroin, but only within a few hours of the latest usage.

What American Screening Provides Pain Clinics

American Screening understands that pain management centers may not always carry a large budget for drug tests. This is why we deliver highly affordable, cost-effective, superior-quality screening kits direct from the manufacturer.

Resellers and Distributors

ALCOHOL AND DRUG TESTING PRODUCTS FOR RESELLERS AND DISTRIBUTORS

Each year, the United States loses countless lives and at least $740 billion to the substance and abuse problem. The government is doing the best it can, but it also needs the cooperation of the private sector and the general public to fight the menace.

For its part, American Screening Corporation manufactures superior-quality, highly affordable screening kits that test people for illicit drugs, alcohol, and even nicotine/tobacco. The results will then be used by the healthcare community to design programs intended to treat individuals and put them on the road to recovery.

To get these lifesaving products to the people, we work with resellers and distributors of any size. We deliver to any state, and we also ship our products to Canada and other parts of the world.

When resellers and distributors carry our nicotine/tobaccoalcohol, and illicit-drug testing products, and thereafter make these readily available to individuals, families, organizations, and communities, not only do they carry out a social obligation; they also generate more income.

Types of Tests American Screening Offers

Our products are safe and easy-to-use, and these yield accurate results in a timely manner.

Most of our screening kits offer instant detection, which means that those conducting the tests need not send the samples to laboratories for analysis. The subjects no longer need to go to testing centers for screening, and no one has to endure days of waiting for the results. [NOTE: There are tests, however, that require lab analysis.]

Retailers

ALCOHOL AND DRUG TESTING FOR THE RETAIL TRADE INDUSTRY WORKFORCE

The United States retail services industry boasts more than a million establishments that together generate more than $5 trillion revenue each year.

The vibrant industry is here to stay and continue growing. Per Bureau of Labor Statistics data for June 2019, its workforce comprises 15.8 million employees, who put in average weekly hours of 30.7 and earn average hourly wages of $19.63.

Businesses in the retail space generally project an upbeat aura. Their goal, after all, is to transact with customers, sell them merchandise, and ensure satisfaction with their purchase. It is thus ironic that work environments in this industry are very much affected by the alcohol and drug-abuse malady. But this is reality, and the problem must be solved as soon as possible.

Statistics: Alcohol and Drug Use, Misuse, and Abuse in the Retail Trade Industry

  • The 2015 report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) suggests that between 2007 and 2013, the retail trade industry had the 10th highest number of heavy drinkers of alcoholic beverages in the US workforce, with 9% of its employees having at least five drinks on the same occasion.
  • The SAMHSA report also suggests that between 2007 and 2013, the accommodations and food services industry had the eighth highest number of illicit-drug users in the US workforce, with 10.3% of its employees into marijuana/hashish, inhalants, hallucinogenscocaine (including crack), heroin, or prescription drugs taken non-medically.

Impact of Substance Use, Misuse, and Abuse in the Retail Industry

The adverse effects of alcohol and drug consumption in the retail trade industry include:

  • Lost revenue and opportunity due to worker tardiness and absenteeism
  • Lost resources tied to sanctioning erring workers
  • Increased risk of unintentional bodily injury, property damage, or other mishaps due to the impaired judgment, lack of concentration, or poor performance of workers under the influence
  • Increased risk of theft
  • Low morale level and sense of security among coworkers
  • Reduced trust of customers, other stakeholders, and the community in general

It is also possible that the retail stores will be used by substance-abusing workers as a trading post for controlled and prohibited substances—putting businesses at risk even more.

Types of Tests That Are Appropriate for the Retail Trade Industry Workforce

Accuracy and efficiency are key in every successful alcohol and drug screen, and these are exactly what retail businesses seek in screening kits. And because time is of the essence, especially in this trade, the people performing the screens tests want the process to be quick and easy.

The three (3) types of alcohol and drug tests are:

What American Screening Provides the Retail Trade Industry Workforce

American Screening understands that businesses within the field of retail trade may not always have a large budget to screen their workers for alcohol and drug use, misuse, or abuse. This is why we deliver inexpensive yet superior-quality tests straight from the manufacturer.

We understand as well that the staff assigned to conduct the tests do not have the luxury of time to learn complex procedures related to alcohol and drug screening, which is why we provide safe and easy-to-use products that give fast and accurate results.

To keep pace with trends, we also offer screening kits for synthetic drugs like K2 (also known as “spice”) and fentanyl.

Nicotine/tobacco tests and steroid tests are available as well.

All our alcohol and drug testing products conform to SAMHSA and OHSA standards.

Schools

NICOTINE/TOBACCOALCOHOL, AND DRUG TESTING FOR SCHOOLS

Education brings hope for a bright future in America and the rest of the world, and it is closely associated with schools.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), as of Academic Year 2015-2016, the United States is home to almost 140,000 public elementary and high schools, private elementary and high schools, and postsecondary Title IV institutions.

Also according to NCES, there are about 16.9 million students attending grades 9 to 12 in Academic Year 2019-2020, and 3.7 million of them are expected to graduate in 2020. Moreover, there are 3.7 million teachers providing classroom instruction for elementary and high school students.

With these figures, the prospects appear bright, except for the fact that educational institutions are not spared from the substance use and abuse problem.

Statistics: Nicotine.Tobacco, Alcohol, and Drug Use, Misuse, and Abuse in Schools

  • A 2017 report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (or SAMHSA) suggests that each year, about 5.5 million males and females between the ages of 11 and 21 engage in binge drinking at least once.
  • An Office of Population Affairs (OPA) report indicates that in 2017, 13% of the high school population had been binge drinking at least once, having consumed at least 4 alcoholic drinks in a row within a couple of hours on a single occasion.
  • The same OPA report indicates that in 2017, 41% of the high school population (grades 9-12) had tried to quit using cigarettes, shisha or hookah tobacco, and electronic vapor products, and other tobacco products.
  • Also in 2017, 36% of the high school population had tried smoking marijuana, 6% had tried inhalants, and 5% had tried cocaine in any form (including crack). In 2015-2016, 4% had misused prescription pain relievers at least once.
  • In 2015-2016, 2% of the high school population admitted they needed but did not receive treatment for alcohol use and abuse, while 3% said they needed but did not receive treatment for illicit-drug use and abuse.

Impact of Student Substance Use, Misuse, and Abuse

The adverse effects of nicotine/tobaccoalcohol, and drug consumption by students include:

  • Lost opportunity to advance academically due to lack of focus, tardiness, and/or absenteeism
  • Lost resources tied to sanctioning erring students
  • Increased risk of unintentional bodily harm, property damage, or other mishaps due to substance-induced behavior of students under the influence
  • Low morale level and sense of security in the school

It is possible for students to use the school as a conduit for distributing controlled and prohibited substances—further endangering lives and property within the academic institution and the community.

Legality of Testing in Schools

In mid-2002, the US Supreme Court ruled to allow schools to conduct random drug testing for middle and high school students who are engaged in any competitive extracurricular activity. Previously, schools could only screen student athletes. It must be noted, however, that states have varying legal thresholds as regards student drug testing.

Testing Teachers for Substance Use

The faculty and staff hold safety-sensitive positions within the school system. As such, they may be tested for prohibited substances to ensure that the workplace is, indeed, a drug-free zone. Although the subject’s privacy rights could be an issue, screening for illicit drugs are necessary when public interest is at stake.

Types of Tests That Are Appropriate for Schools

Accuracy and efficiency are key in every successful nicotine/tobaccoalcohol, and drug screen, and these are exactly what the educational institutions seek in screening kits. And because time is of the essence, the staff designated to perform the tests want the process to be quick and easy.

The three (3) types of nicotine/tobaccoalcohol, and drug tests are:

  • Hair Follicle Test. This can tell whether or not the student, teacher, or staff being screened has taken nicotine/tobaccoalcohol, or drugs within 90 days of the test.
  • Urine Test. This can prove that the student, teacher, or staff being screened has consumed nicotine/tobaccoalcohol, or an illicit drug within a few days of the test.
  • Saliva Test. This is not as invasive as the Urine Drug Test, and it does not require a private room or urinal for sample collection. It can tell if the student, teacher, or staff being screened has consumed nicotine/tobaccoalcohol, marijuanacocaine, or amphetamine within three days of the test. It can also detect heroin, but only within a few hours of the latest usage.

What American Screening Provides for Schools

Security Companies

ALCOHOL AND DRUG TESTING FOR THE PRIVATE SECURITY INDUSTRY

The private security industry in the United States is a critical component of public safety, and its workforce is charged with protecting people, animals, private property, critical infrastructure, communities, and the environment.

The industry is also vital in making the criminal justice system work, and some of its tasks are gathering important information, obtaining pieces of evidence, and helping government agencies track and arrest felons.

Security employees are expected to be alert and fit at all times because of their demanding job. They also need to be of sound mind, so they can quickly analyze facts, make life-saving decisions, and respond to life-and-death situations with timeliness. Ideally, they are in control of themselves and follow a healthy lifestyle; however, in reality, many of them use, misuse, and abuse controlled and/or prohibited substances.

Most companies require job applicants to be subject to pre-employment screens, but this is not enough to guard their business and stakeholders’ interests. To ensure that the workforce is consistently “clean” and capable of the judicious discharge of duties, employers must perform periodic testing.

Impact of Substance Use, Misuse, and Abuse by Security Personnel

Some adverse effects of alcohol and drug abuse among security personnel are:

  • Lost revenue and opportunity due to employee tardiness and absenteeism
  • Lost resources tied to imposing sanctions on erring workers
  • Increased risk of property damage, unintentional bodily injury, and other mishaps due to the impaired judgment of employees under the influence
  • Increased risk of untoward incidents and costly mistakes due to the substance-induced bad behavior of employees under the influence
  • Low morale level and sense of security among coworkers
  • Reduced trust of clients

It is also possible for security personnel to use their professional network as a conduit for distributing controlled and prohibited substances—further endangering the business and the community.

Types of Tests That Are Appropriate for the Private Security Industry

Accuracy is key in every successful alcohol and drug screen, and this is what security companies seek in screening kits. And because time is of the essence, the staff designated to perform the tests want the process to be quick and easy.

Sports Industry

DRUG SOLUTIONS FOR THE SPORTS INDUSTRY

The field of sports is often associated with health and fitness. The competition that goes with it, however, sometimes defeats the purpose of exemplifying human well-being. This happens when athletes start to think of nothing but winning, and then go for the gold at any cost—without regard for their principles.

There have been many individuals in the athletic history of the United States who have been caught “doping” or using performance-enhancing drugs that are banned substances. Two of the most prominent names would be cyclist Lance Armstrong and track-and-field star Marion Jones, each of whom was found to be ahead in their game due to doping.

It is the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) that frontlines in addressing this form of sports corruption. Although a non-governmental body, USADA carries the recognition of Congress. Its mandate is to protect the integrity of sport and clean competition, and it gets assistance from several government agencies. It also draws support from professional sports organizations, such as the National Football League and the National Basketball Association.

While USADA caters to established sports organizations, it also reaches out to young athletes, their parents, and their coaches, who might all be directly or indirectly affected by the doping practice. Through its TrueSport programs, USADA educates people on the ill effects of doping.

Despite the efforts, however, countless people in the sports industry suffer the impact of substance use and abuse. What can prevent the problem from spreading further are the routine and random tests that will determine the necessity of treatment, rehabilitation, and recovery.

Types of Tests That Are Appropriate for the Sports Industry

Accuracy is key in every successful alcohol and drug screen, and this is what sports organizations seek in screening kits. And because time is of the essence, the personnel designated to conduct the tests want the process to be simple and swift.

  • Saliva Drug Test. This is not as invasive as the Urine Drug Test, and it does not require a private room for collecting the sample. It can tell if the subject has used marijuanacocaineamphetamine, or steroids within a few days of the test. It can also detect heroin, but only within a few hours of the latest usage.

 Transportation

ALCOHOL AND DRUG TESTING FOR THE TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY

America’s transportation industry generates trillions of dollars each year, and it is as significant to the nation as it is to the world. With it, people can go from point A to point B, while goods are passed from producers and distributors to consumers.

Given its importance in almost all industries (including travel, tourism, utilities, manufacturing, wholesale, retail, and logistics), the transportation space expects its workers to be at the top of their game at all times. Every business definitely wants its employees to perform their tasks well—with consistency and without them making expensive mistakes, disrupting the supply chain, damaging infrastructure and property, and endangering lives and the environment.

Most likely, businesses in the transportation industry have a set of safety and security measures in place. This is for them to meet their targets, attain their goals, and deliver exceptional services, minus unnecessary costs and losses.

Despite the safety and security measures, however, issues and problems still arise, including substance use and abuse among the workers holding safety-sensitive positions. The substances in question are mostly alcohol and illicit drugs.

To prevent or control the menace, periodic and random testing is performed.

Statistics: Alcohol and Drug Use, Misuse, and Abuse in the Transportation Industry

  • The 2015 report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) suggests that between 2007 and 2013, the transportation and warehousing industry had the 11th highest number of heavy drinkers of alcoholic beverages in the US workforce, with 8.8% of its employees having at least five drinks on the same occasion.
  • The same SAMHSA report also suggests that between 2007 and 2013, the manufacturing industry had the 14th highest number of illicit-drug users in the US workforce, with 5.9% of its employees having consumed marijuana/hashish, inhalants, hallucinogenscocaine (including crack), heroin, or prescription drugs taken non-medically at least once during the period.

Impact of Substance Use, Misuse, and Abuse in the Transportation Industry

The adverse effects of alcohol and drug consumption in the manufacturing industry, as well as the Accommodation and Food Services industry, include:

  • Lost revenue and opportunity as a result of employee tardiness and absenteeism
  • Lost resources as a result of imposing sanctions on drunken or drugged employees
  • Increased risk of property damage or bodily injury as a result of impaired judgment of employees under the influence
  • Increased risk of costly workplace mistakes as a result of lack of concentration and poor performance of employees under the influence
  • Low morale level and sense of security among colleagues
  • Reduced trust of clients and other stakeholders

Quite disturbingly, the dynamic nature of the transportation industry makes the work areas likely places for sourcing and selling controlled and prohibited substances. This endangers businesses even more.

Legal Basis for Testing Employees in the Transportation Industry

Fatal accidents on the road, in the waters, and in flight have happened as a result of alcohol or drug consumption by transportation employees. To minimize, if not totally eliminate, the risk of substance-induced mishaps, the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 was passed by the US Congress.

The law thus serves as the basis for testing members of the transportation industry workforce for controlled or prohibited substances.

Mandatory tests are required for an estimated 12.1 million aviation, maritime, mass transit, motor carrier (trucking), rail, and pipeline workers with safety-sensitive functions.

Types of Tests That Are Appropriate for the Transportation Industry

Accuracy and efficiency are key in every successful alcohol and drug screen, and these are exactly what employers in the transportation industry seek in screening kits. And because time is of the essence, the staff conducting the tests want the process to be simple and swift.

Treatment Centers

ALCOHOL AND DRUG TESTING FOR TREATMENT CENTERS

Substance use disorders (SUDs) are associated with nicotine/tobaccoalcohol, or drug dependence, abuse, or addiction. These are chronic diseases resulting from a combination of factors, including genetic and environmental conditions. Like cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other serious medical issues, SUDs are better treated in clinical settings, as these are not likely to be cured by willpower alone.

The prevalence of SUDs in the United States, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, exacts at least $740 billion annually in costs related to healthcare, lost productivity, and crime.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration estimates that the United States in 2017 had at least 22 million people (aged 12 and above) with past-year abuse or dependence on alcohol or illicit drugs—or both.

The same SAMHSA report indicates that during the year, 5.2 million persons with SUDs received treatment from public or private facilities.

In light of the figures above, it is important for treatment centers to monitor the progress of their patients and make sure they fully recover from their respective SUDs.

Alcohol or drug testing is thus crucial throughout the program, so the therapists and administrators can come up with correct and effective recommendations at every stage of the treatment. The rehabilitation facilities must remember that the success of their intervention is usually measured by the low-to-zero number of relapse cases, and they can only achieve this if periodic evaluations are made.

Types of Tests That Are Appropriate for Treatment Centers

Accuracy is key in every successful alcohol and drug screen, and this is what rehab facilities seek in screening kits. And because time is of the essence, the staff designated to conduct the tests want the process to be easy and quick.

Pregnancy Questions

How do pregnancy tests work?

When pregnant, your body produces human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), otherwise known as the pregnancy hormone. This hormone is produced when a fertilized egg implants the uterus. Studies show waiting one week after your missed period will typically give the most accurate results.

How accurate are home pregnancy tests?

There are many factors that can affect the accuracy of a home pregnancy test (HPT).

1.    When taking a HPT, carefully read the instructions and check the expiration date.

2.    The amount of hCG increases daily so in order to get the most accurate results, studies show that you should wait one week after your missed period.

3.    Another factor that can affect HPT results is the test itself; some tests are more sensitive than others and can spot hCG earlier than others.

4.    Remember, all women are different and the amount of hCG in each woman will differ so some women may receive more accurate test results sooner than others.

How soon after a missed period can I take a home pregnancy test and get accurate results?

Many HPTs claim to be 99% accurate on the day you expect your period. However, studies show that most HPTs accurately confirm pregnancies one week after the missed period.

Can anything interfere with home pregnancy test results?

Most medications do not interfere with home pregnancy test results, including birth control pills. However, a false positive may happen if you are taking any medications that have hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in them, like medications that treat infertility.

Can drinking too much liquid affect my result?

Yes. Drinking too much liquid before taking a HPT can dilute the levels of the hCG, the pregnancy hormone, which can result in a false negative. It’s best to wait until you naturally pass urine.
