Will over-the-counter or prescription medication(s) give a false-positive test result?
Over-the-counter and prescription drugs may cause a positive test results. American Screening Corp’s (ASC’s) website has a drug search capability for most over-the-counter and prescription drugs. This search will provide information if an over-the-counter or prescription drug will display positive or non-reactive test results with one of ASC’s products.
You can search by:
- Clicking on the “Drug Search” blue tab located on the top of ASC’s website.
- On the “Drug Search” page is two drop down screens. One for Trade (Brand name drug) and one for Generic drug.
If the drug you are searching for is not in our drug search, contact ASC and we can research an answer.
In addition, if the donor takes numerous medications, this will increase the probability of a false positive for drugs. It is recommended that the positive specimen be sent for a Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) confirmation by a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) certified laboratory.
